Our temperatures have been hitting all-time highs and many of us have been struggling to stay calm and composed in the heat. Not only does extreme heat make us feel uncomfortable, it also takes a toll on our makeup! Think runny makeup and a heavy feeling with a full face of makeup.

It’s time to make the switch from heavy matte and powder formulas to heat-proof tinted products and cream formulas, as well as lip products that are subtle and moisturising.

To make them last longer, make-up artist Marie Soh recommends to prep your skin well, have a good skincare routine and leave some time between each step so the product can absorb properly.

“Use a good primer without too much silicone and set using loose powder and setting spray,” she explains. “It’s important that you press the loose powder into your skin and not just glide it over.”

Marie says you can apply your sheer formula the “lazy girl way” by just using your fingers and blending well. Her preferred method is to use a sponge and blot the product into the skin for a beautiful blended and natural finish.

“I also like to layer on where I feel I need a bit more coverage,” she adds.

She says selecting the best lightweight formula depends on your comfort level and preference. She personally likes “those that feel like nothing on my skin after applying”.

Here are our favourite sheer formulas and tips to beat the heat.

Use cream eyeshadow instead of powder

Cream eyeshadow stays put for longer and can be easily applied with just a fingertip. Gucci Beauty Palette De Beaute Quatuor, $120, features four-part palettes for eyes, lips and cheeks. They are buildable colours that blend easily so you can layer them on for different looks and effects. All-day wear is possible with these three powder formulas, in both matte and satin finishes. And because the colours are combined with a cream formula, they warm up your eyes, lips and cheeks. The range comes in three different colour combinations – Summerina Brown, Rosa Nitida and Wild Bouquet.

Thick foundation is an absolute no-no when it comes to hot climates — use tinted moisturiser instead, which is sheer enough to show some of your skin underneath. Chanel Beauty Les Beiges Water Fresh Complexion Touch, $107 ,is a lightweight formula that feels like a second skin, thanks to the new microfluidic formula that features pigments encapsulated in micro-droplets. It corrects and evens out complexion and keeps skin hydrated and protected throughout the day. The lightweight gel texture is composed of approximately 60% water, which means it gives your skin a unique, cooling sensation. Available in six shades.
