In the market for a mattress that will give you that well-deserved good night’s sleep every night? Don’t be too quick to buy the first mattress you see.

It’s important to buy the right one, and the most expensive one may not always be the one that’s most suited for you. Marcus Goh, the founder of local mattress brand Hennsley, dishes some tips on getting the right type of mattress.

Marcus categorises people based on two major body types, regardless of gender: A person with average build and a fuller body person.

He advises someone with a fuller body to avoid choosing softer mattresses. “Upon using the mattress, our body impression will be formed on the mattress top. This is a reflection of your mattress reacting to your body weight and contour.” He draws the analogy of using a brand-new pair of shoes that feels tight at first but will feel looser after repeated usage. Because of this reason, a person with a fuller body might find that the mattress doesn’t give them a good support over time. He advises such people to choose a mattress with high to medium firmness.

Marcus says an average-built person has more freedom to choose the level of comfort they desire when it comes to choosing a mattress. However, he advises choosing one based on how you sleep. Here’s a guide.
