For many, S R Nathan was a legend. The 92-year-old was Singapore's longest-serving head of state and even before his term as president from 1999 to 2011, he was a social worker, trade union activist and then a diplomat in a distinguished public service career that spanned five decades.

But behind the politician, there was a man, first and foremost.

A man from humble beginnings who demonstrated what hard work, determination, grit, belief and love for your nation could do to bring people together. A man who never left any citizen behind, a man to look up to, a man to admire.
