Here's a piece of skincare hard truth: your pores do not open, close, shrink or expand. Hey, so what are those gaping holes that I see on my face, and how do I reduce the appearance of these 'open pores'?

Keeping your pores clean and clear will minimise their appearance on your skin. You can start by dissolving the oil, dead skin and pollution that creates the shadows that you see inside the pores, which makes them seem deeper and wider than they are.

Here are three skincare and makeup tricks that you can try to minimise the appearance of your pores:

#1 Clay Cleanser

A clay-based cleanser or mask will draw out impurities and makeup from your skin surface. If you're new to clay products, try the Australian skincare brand, Alpha-H's Clear Skin Blemish Control Mask with White Clay and Aloe Vera ($52) – we've seen pretty great skincare results from long-term use of Alpha-H's products.

If you have sensitive skin and are cautious about the products that you try, opt for the Origins Original Skin Retexturizing Mask with Rose Clay ($39) from its gentler rose series instead.

#2 Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs)

To give your skin an extra cleanse, look out for beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) products for a weekly peel to exfoliate and refine your skin for improved clarity and radiance. Do note that if you're using any skincare products with acids involved, you will need to use sunscreen daily (both indoors and outdoors).

If you're new to beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), try the this wallet-friendly Beta Hydroxy Acid Exfoliant by The Inkey List ($20) or  Sephora Collection's Pores Serum ($32).

#3 Primer

For an instant fix, try a skin-smoothing primer before you brush on your foundation. A primer will prep your skin for a radiant and powerless velvety finish. Try the holy grail vegan Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer ($91) that's been praised to be lightweight, fast absorbing, and for its almost matte texture. For sensitive skin types, opt for Ren Clean Skincare's Perfect Canvas Clean Primer ($73) instead.
