In a tribute to the late Princess Diana, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced they were expecting a sibling for Archie on Valentine’s Day, 37 days to the date that the Princess of Wales had announced she was expecting her second child, Prince Harry.
The announcement comes seven months after the Duchess of Sussex wrote a heartbreaking piece detailing her experience of a miscarriage in July, 2020.
Lying in the grass under a tree, the royal couple looked relaxed with Meghan’s head in Harry’s lap. In a statement to People magazine, the couple said “We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.” Their first child, Archie Harrison, turns 2 on May 6.
The photo is a beautiful black-and-white shot taken remotely by iPad by longtime friend and photographer, Misan Harriman (who incidentally introduced Meghan to a mutual friend of Harry’s). The Duchess of Sussex wears a dress which was created for her by the brand Carolina Herrera for her first pregnancy with Archie.
The announcement mirrored the one made by the Prince and Princess of Wales when they were pregnant with Prince Harry, 37 years ago. In a typically British statement to People, a spokesman shared the royal family’s well wishes, “Her Majesty, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales and the entire family are ‘delighted’ and wish them well.”
