An Interior Designer's Cosy 700 Sq Ft Condo With A Black, White & Wood Colour Palette
Here's a peek at how he made the cosy space work, including nifty and multi-purpose storage ideas.
Given the limited dimensions of their new 700 sq ft condo unit in Zion Road in 2018, Raymond Cheng of interior design and digital imaging firm Dreammetal decided against tampering with the layout set by the developer – the rooms and their sizes were sufficient for himself, his wife and their small pet pooch.
The most striking storage solution that Raymond designed for his home is the kitchen island, which serves multiple purposes.
“When visitors come in through the main door, the ‘wall divider’ conceals the island from view – it isn’t really nice to walk into someone’s house, and the first thing that greets you is the kitchen. The ‘wall’ directs guests towards the living area, and establishes the hierarchy of the spaces,” he says.
A monochromatic image montage of gritty, run-down apartment buildings adds to the tactile colour palette of the living room.
A low sideboard from Journey East functions as a TV console, and adds a rustic-industrial feel to the home.
In the smaller bedroom, which Raymond has converted into his home office, two perpendicular walls are lined with built-in cabinets and open shelves. He added a layer of drawers over the bay window to further keep his work area neat and organised.
Even in a small area, you can still use darker hues and textured finishes if you keep the colours neutral.
The bedroom has a bigger amount of wood and black for “mood”. The horizontal lines of the wood paneling on the wall, the bedside tables and the bay window seat all create the illusion of a wider space.
A custom-built bed incorporates linen drawers and bedside tables with flip-top compartments for knick-knacks.
