This Jumbo HDB Flat Looks Even Bigger With Its Open-Concept And Neutral Palette
This renovation project garnered the Bronze award for Best Residential Design (Apartment), at the IDCS 2020 Design Excellence Awards
Jumbo HDB flats are often nearly twice the size of a regular 4-room flat. But the owners of this flat wanted to make it seem even more spacious, giving their child space to explore and let their creativity flow. So when they approached Lite Design Collaborative (LDC) to design their Woodlands home, they already had an open concept in mind.
LDC addressed this by bringing lots of light into the space. A calming, bright palette of neutrals and light wood was used to reflect light, as well as partitions like a glass bi-fold door and screen, which help to segregate spaces without being too visually heavy.
The space also needed some reconfiguring to meet the family’s requirements of a wet and dry kitchen, a walk-in wardrobe with a double sink, and a helper’s room.
AT A GLANCE
Who lives here: A family of three
Size of home: 177sqm
Type of home: Jumbo HDB flat

The living room features a screen at the entrance for privacy.
Opposite, the open-concept dry kitchen allows for interaction between family members in the kitchen and living area.
To keep the look clean and streamlined, LDC ensured the track lighting was recessed into the ceiling.
The entryway also features a settee with a cushion for the family to put on their shoes. Here, they’ve kept to neutrals like white and grey to complement the maple laminate.
The dining area features storage at the side in the form of a slim, full-height cabinet, so that the family can keep the table clutter-free.
A bi-fold glass wall divider helps to let light through into the middle of the home. When the family has friends and relatives over, this can be opened up for more space.
In the master bedroom, a concealed door in the feature wall opens up to reveal the walk-in wardrobe.
