While watching Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum run around an island trying to uncover a lost city on 28 February, Neo Yi Ting got up once again for a pee break, possibly brought on by her pregnancy craving of Ribena. This time though, the moment she got up from her seat, she too would find herself uncovering a new world. The world of parenthood.

Basically, her water bag broke. And it was a good two weeks before the expected due date of 9 March.

Her leap year baby Kyler Chan sprung into the world at 12.47am on 29 February. Yi Ting jokes: “His birthday is like the Olympics, once every four years!”

Could this be Singapore’s next gold medalist?

Unlike the Olympics, the parents plan to celebrate his birthday yearly on 28 February and 1 March. And they certainly hold him to no athletic expectations.

Weighing 3.435kg at birth, Kyler is the first child for the 31-year-old parents, special education teacher and her husband Chan Keng Pang, an army regular. At their last doctor’s appointment, to their surprise, Yi Ting had already begun to dilate. An induction was scheduled for 1 March, but it turned out that Kyler was much more excited to meet them.

The meaning behind "Kyler"

As for that unique name? Kyler takes the first letter of each of his parent’s initials, added with “ler” which mum explains is “love for ever”.

Kyler’s special birth date is significant for the couple, who were both born on “boring dates” as Yi Ting puts it. Fun fact: Kyler was conceived on their honeymoon in Turkey!

Are more children on the horizon? Yi Ting says: “Hopefully in two years, but we’re happy with whatever and whenever things choose to happen.”

She added: “We had a great experience delivering at Mount Alvernia Hospital. The warm staff, nurses and kind doctors… doesn’t hurt that the food has been amazing too!”

We wish Yi Ting and her family a restful recovery, and best wishes for the parenting road ahead. Heartiest congrats!
