Who says you need to fly to the Maldives for that ultimate island escape? Just a short drive away from Singapore lies a hidden gem in Malaysia, which offers stunning over-water villas, pristine beaches, and delicious seafood — all without breaking the bank.

Port Dickson (PD) is famous for its coastal beaches, fresh seafood and affordable over-water villas, making it the perfect destination for a short weekend getaway for the whole family.

Here’s a complete itinerary of my 2D1N stay (including alternate activities you may consider doing)!

Note: The itinerary and timings recommended in this article are based on the writer’s personal experience. Timings and traffic conditions may vary, especially during peak seasons.

The ultimate family-friendly Port Dickson weekend itinerary

Day 1 (Saturday) — 9am: Depart Singapore for Port Dickson

For the purposes of this article, let’s assume that you and your family drive yourselves from Singapore to Port Dickson.

Embark on your journey from Singapore at around 9am. The drive (depending on traffic conditions) will take you around 4 to 4.5 hours from Singapore to Port Dickson, Malaysia.

12pm to 1.30pm: Stop by Melaka for lunch

Around 3 hours into your journey to Port Dickson, you’ll pass by Melaka. Take a short stop here for lunch!

I recommend checking out Klebang Coconut Shake, a legendary spot famous for its cafeteria-style lunch and refreshing coconut shakes.

This is my family’s must-visit stop every time we come to Melaka. There’s free parking (albeit in the hot sun), and the place sells many other dishes such as nasi lemak (simple yet so good), fried bee hoon, and an assortment of kuih.

Check out the rest of my Melaka itinerary here!

1.30pm to 3pm: Continue driving to Port Dickson

From Melaka, it’ll take you around 1.5 hours to reach Port Dickson.

3pm to 4pm: Check into Port Dickson hotel — Lexis Hibiscus

With countless beachfront hotels lining Port Dickson, we opted for Lexis Hibiscus. Its Maldives-inspired over-water villas were an instant draw.

From the moment we stepped out of the car, we were enveloped in luxury — the attentive staff was on hand to assist with our luggage and it was a smooth check-in process.

Lexis Hibiscus Executive Pool Villa review

The Executive Pool Villa we booked consisted of a spacious 71 sqm over-water villa, complete with a private swimming pool and personal sauna

The cherry on top was a glass panel on the floor in the middle of the room, offering a peek into the underwater world.

Standard amenities like coffee, tea, water, and toiletries were provided. Plus, we enjoyed complimentary breakfast and free parking.

Here's the full room tour:

And the best part? 24/7 buggy service ensures that you’ll always get around the resort (it is pretty huge) with ease.

Plus, you can get your workout in at the gym, take a dip in the outdoor pool, or let the kids enjoy the playground. All this and more for the incredibly affordable price of just S$200 a night? Yes, please.

The villa can comfortably accommodate a group of up to four adults with its two king-sized beds. Other hotel facilities also include a gym, outdoor swimming pool, and an outdoor playground

4pm to 6pm: Relax and check out various activities within the hotel

It’s free time for the whole family! Here are some family-friendly ideas on how you can spend the next two hours (and you don’t even need to leave the resort)!

We suggest you head to Hibiscus Walk, which has an array of outdoor and indoor activities for everyone.

Hibiscus Walk

Located adjacent to the resort, this blissful oceanside oasis is all you need to unwind after a busy week. Adorned with an array of sunbeds and a stunning panoramic view of the water villas, you can relax at the beach area or partake in exhilarating outdoor and water activities.

For parents planning to turn your family weekend in Port Dickson into an unforgettable adventure, you’ll be pleased to discover that the hotel provides adrenaline-pumping activities like ATV rides, beach archery, jet-skiing, kayaking, and more.

Here are all the activities you can do at Hibiscus Walk and the connecting beach:

The hotel priortises safety here — all guests will have a full safety briefing from a trained team before they get on board all water sports rides. Guests are also required to read and acknowledge an indemnity agreement.

Bicycles can be rented within the resort. There are single bicycles, children's bicycles, tandem bicycles, and even three-wheeler e-bikes available.

If you have toddlers and want to leave them somewhere safe while you explore the resort, you’d be glad to know that Lexis Hibiscus also has an indoor playground with staff supervision called Kidz World. This offers a range of activities designed to introduce them to new experiences.

Other activities provided by the hotel include an evening cruise, where your family can enjoy Port Dickson’s sea breeze as you cruise along the waters of the Straits of Melaka.

There is also a boat with a glass bottom especially catered for guests who wish to try their hands at fish feeding.

Happening from 6pm to 7:30pm daily, the cost is an affordable 88RM (S$25.34) per adult and 55RM (S$15.80) per child below 13 years old.

6pm - 8pm: Dinner

Now, it was a chill weekend and after entering our villa, all we wanted to do was stay inside (yes, we really liked the room). We simply ordered some food via Grab, but if you do a quick Google search, there are plenty of seafood options around.

8pm: Catch the fire show at Hibiscus Beach

One unmissable programme at Lexis Hibiscus includes the hotel’s unique fire show, which happens every Saturday from 8pm to 8.30pm.

Rest of the night: Chill in your private pool

Because, tell me, when is the next time you will be able to squeeze in a midnight dip?

Day 2 (Sunday) — Breakfast, Check out and explore Port Dickson before heading back to Singapore

Morning: Breakfast

We had an amazing breakfast buffet at the hotel’s restaurant, Roselle Coffee House.

There was a wide array of delectable dishes — we ate everything from the live cooking stations and pastries to fresh fruits and Chinese fare like porridge — all while enjoying breathtaking views.

Whether you prefer the open-air ambiance of al fresco dining or the comfort of air-conditioned indoor seating, there's something for everyone.

11am: Check out

After breakfast, check out of your room and throw your bags into your car before heading out to explore the rest of Port Dickson.

11am to 3pm: Explore Port Dickson

If you didn’t drive, you should take advantage of the hotel’s complimentary shuttle bus service that’ll bring your folks to various local attractions in Port Dickson.

This includes Benn’s Chocolate Factory, Sunggala Gateway (for some shopping and retail therapy), and Army Museum PD, where you can marvel at exhibits of weapons, military aircraft and helicopters, a selection of armoured vehicles, artillery pieces and more.

Here’s the entire schedule of the hotel’s free shuttle bus.

If you drive and have a more flexible schedule, also check out:

X Park Malaysia: An outdoor sports park with over 20 activities including go-kart, high ropes, and bungee jumping.

Sky Ladder Pineapple Farm: A fun-filled farm experience where you and your kids can learn about pineapple plantations, harvest your own corn, and feed animals at the petting zoo. Located slightly far out, at around 30KM from Lexis Hibiscus.

Uncle Wong Happy Farm: Offers outdoor activities like paddle boating, kayaking, and draft karting.

PD Ostrich & Pets Show Farm: You may feed these giant birds, pet them, race with them and even try to stand on ostrich eggs!

3pm to 7pm: Head back to Singapore

When you’re done, it’s another 4 to 4.5 hours drive back to Singapore.

Depending on the jam (and your luck), you should be able to reach Singapore at around dinnertime.
