A popular dish zichar classic, hor fun delivers a multitude of flavours and textures in one dish. Chewy, slippery broad kway teow noodles are contrasted against the crunch of vegetables and tender proteins as smokey wok hei mingles with the savory, usually thickened gravy. And once you've had a taste, it's likely you'd be craving it from time to time.

Here are 20 spots to get the best hor fun in Singapore to satisfy your tastebuds when the yearning arises, from stalls that have been awarded Michelin Bib Gourmand titles to decades-old establishments and newer entrants with inventive takes on the classic dish.

1. Kok Sen Restaurant

Once again clinching the Michelin Bib Gourmand title in 2024, Kok Sen Restaurant is a famous zi char restaurant in the Keong Saik enclave. Now helmed by third-generation owners, the establishment has been around since 1970 and one of the staple dishes you have to order here is the Big Prawns Hor Fun (from $26.60), where slippery kway teow is accented with large prawns and a thickened gravy. Other favourites include Black Bean Dry Beef Hor Fun (from $11.60), Prawn Paste Chicken, and Claypot Yong Tau Foo.

Kok Sen Restaurant is at 30 Keong Saik Rd, Singapore 089110 and 180 Kitchener Rd, #04-31/32 City Square Mall, Singapore 208539. Visit its website for more information.

2. Keng Eng Kee Seafood

Keng Eng Kee Seafood started as a humble zichar hawker stall along Old Havelock Road in the 1970s. 50 years later, the brand is still strong under the leadership of third-generation owners, the Liew siblings — Paul, Wayne, and Jiamin. Once patronised by the late Anthony Bourdain, one big attraction at the multi-year Michelin Guide eatery is the Signature Moonlight Horfun (from $12), where a raw egg yolk crowns the dish and adds extra richness. Also, try the Butter Cereal Prawns, Coffee Pork Ribs, and ‘Choy Hiang’ Beancurd.

Keng Eng Kee Seafood has multiple locations in Singapore, including 124 Bukit Merah Lane 1, #01-136 Alexandra Village, Singapore 150124 and 1/A Tampines Street 92, Safra Tampines, Singapore 528882. Visit its website for more information.

3. Kee Hock Cooked Food

There are two main types of beef hor fun. The first is the dry style akin to char kway teow. The second style is more synonymous with the usual hor fun drenched in thickened gravy. The latter ($5) is what you’ll get at Kee Hock Cooked Food, a hawker stall started by Ah Yao over a decade ago in Clementi that has become known for it. For non-beef eaters, there are sliced fish ($5) and fish and prawn ($5) versions too, alongside a variety of zichar picks, including Imperial Pork Ribs ($10/$15) and Ging & Spring Onion Sliced Fish or Beef ($10/$15).

Kee Hock Cooked Food is at 448 Clementi Ave 3, #01-43 Clementi 448 Market & Food Centre, Singapore 120448.

4. Jin Hock Seafood Restaurant

While hor fun is prized for slippery noodles paired with flavourful, thickened gravy, the taste can get pretty one-dimensional after a few bites. To combat that issue, head to Jin Hock Seafood Restaurant for its Lala Double Flavoured Horfun (from $18) created by chef and owner Yap Yew Hock. The classic dish is topped with deep-fried hor fun that lends itself as a textural contrast to break up the monotony. You could also soak them in the sauce for a bite that combines both.
