Our 10 Fave Shio Pan Spots In Singapore, From Butter Town To Noci Bakehouse
This salted butter roll is (unsurprisingly) still hot in demand
By Terri Kue -
Shio pan (translated into English as “salt bread”) is a buttery, crispy-on-the-outside but chewy-on-the-inside bread roll that is slowly gaining popularity among Singaporeans. Originating from Pai Mason – a bakery in the Ehime prefecture in Japan – it is a relatively new global hit that only came about in late 2014.
The typical shio pan is brushed with butter and topped with salt flakes for an extra layer of savoury goodness. Most bakeries in Singapore, however, have added their own twist to the beloved treat through various types of fillings. Some examples include peanut butter, green onion and cream cheese, wagyu beef, and more.

1. Butter Town
A familiar face in the shio pan industry, Butter Town started as a humble home-based business back in 2022. The brand currently has two outlets and three shio pan ‘ATMs’ across Singapore to satisfy everybody’s voracious appetites for their bakes. Our verdict? We understand the hype.
When we visited the Holland Drive location back in 2025, we sampled the OG Shio Pan (which oozes butter with each bite, even hours after purchase) and the Lemon Glazed Shio Pan. While these items are currently still on the menu, Butter Town’s offerings refresh every month. Until the end of May, you can look forward to the Garlic Cheese Shio Pan for a rich savoury mid-day snack, the Truffle Cheese Mushroom option (available only in stores) for something a bit more indulgent, and the Au Chocolat one, perfect for kids. Those who go straight to the Holland Drive Market location can expect exclusive selections such as the Aburi Mentaiko Onion Shio Pan ($5.20) and Milk Cream Shio Pan ($4.20)
Heading to the ATMs instead? You will have access to the Cinnamon Cream Cheese Shio Pan that comes in a mixed bag with the Au Chocolate version. Other flavours are dispensed from the ATMs in bags of three and four.
Shio pan sets are available at physical stores at:
- OG Shio Pan (three for $7.20 and five for $12)
- Garlic Cheese Shio Pan (three for $8.40)
- Au Chocolat Shio Pan (three for $8.40)
- Lemon Glazed Shio Pan (three for $7.80)
- Truffle Cheese Mushroom Shio Pan (three for $12)
- Azuki Mochi Shio Pan Set (three for $9.60)
Those who want to order just one shio pan of any flavour will have to head down to stores before 11am. Individual prices vary depending on the flavour. Prices may vary at the ATMs.
Butter Town has physical stores at 44 Holland Drive, #02-35, Singapore 270044, and 114 Lavender Street, CT HUB 2, #01-38, Singapore 338729. ATMs are located at Woodleigh Village Hawker Centre, Hillion Mall, and Our Tampines Hub. Visit its website or Instagram for more information.
2. Gokoku Bakery
A popular bakery chain originating from Japan, Gokoku Bakery’s shio pans are not to be missed. All four flavours of the shio pan line are made with premium ingredients specially flown from Japan. The original Shio Butter Pan ($2.20) is, as its name suggests, extremely buttery with a nice sprinkle of salt. It reheats amazingly in an air fryer with a spritz of water on all sides.
Other flavours include the Renyu Shio Butter Pan ($2.50) filled with homemade sweet condensed milk cream and the Peanut Shio Butter Pan. If you prefer more Japanese-inspired flavours, the An Shio Butter Pan features chunky sweet red bean paste from Hokkaido, topped with sesame seeds for a nice earthy crunch.
Gokoku Bakery has multiple outlets around Singapore, including Nex, Vivocity, Jurong Point and Great World. Visit its website for more information.
3. Baker’s Bench Bakery
If you’ve stayed on the sourdough hype train since the pandemic, as we have, you’d not be surprised to find that shio pans are getting sourdough renditions. Baker’s Bench Bakery specialises in all things made from a starter, so it makes sense that they’ve managed to incorporate the distinct tang and texture of sourdough into shio pans.
The menu includes three shio pan flavours to choose from. The Le Gall’s Salted Butter Shiopan ($3.80) is the original sourdough remix of the classic, with the saltiness working surprisingly well with the sourdough base. The Garlic Shiopan ($4.30) features sourdough garlic bread — and trust us, you cannot go wrong with garlic bread. Lastly, the Truffle Sourdough Shiopan ($5.50) is a decadent mixture of truffle pate and butter.
Baker’s Bench Bakery is available at 6 Bukit Pasoh Road, Singapore 089820. Visit its website or Instagram for more information.
4. 1816bakes
1816bakes is a small cafe that operates on a pick-up and delivery basis only. Yet, it is popular among those in the know. The last time we checked in, fans had to rely on fast fingers for pre-order. Now, the model has changed slightly; you can preorder three days in advance based on the month’s menu.
The month of May sees the OG ($3.30), the Truffle Mushroom Egg Mayo ($6.90) for fans of the classic egg-mayo sandwiches with a twist, the Strawberry Cheesecake ($6.90) for a delightful sweet treat, and the Earl Grey x Chocolate Namelaka ($7.20) for a flavour mix that is truly unique.
Seeing this article after May? The June menu is already out. On the horizon is the Maple Butter Creme ($6.90) for a mix of sweet and salty, and the floral Honey Jasmine Milk Creme ($7.20). The one we can’t wait to sink our teeth into has to be the Scallion Butter Cream Cheese ($6.90) made with brown butter cream cheese.
1816bakes is located at 183 Jalan Pelikat, #B1-78, Singapore 537643. Visit its website or Instagram for more information.
5. Pawa Bakery
Pawa Bakery may be most popular for its bagels, but its shio pans have also made a name for themselves among those in the know. The Shio Pan ($2.60) is made using Japanese bread flour, Anchor salted butter, and sea salt in order to achieve a strong salty punch. Our previous visit led us to discover the Sweet Potato Shio Pan, which seems to no longer be on the menu.
Now, the other flavours include the Honey Garlic Shio Pan ($3.80) for a delicate balance of strong sweet and savoury flavours, as well as the Pistachio Shio Pan ($3.80), which is a fan favourite.
Pawa Bakery has multiple locations around Singapore including Paya Lebar Quarter, Suntec City and Plaza Singapura. Visit its website and Instagram for more information.
6. Noci Bakehouse
This Korean bakery is the new kid on the block, but its location is familiar to shio pan fanatics. Replacing Bakery 1946 in Suntec City, the shio pans available at Noci Bakehouse seem to change up quite frequently. While we were anticipating items such as the Matcha Salt Bread with red bean or the Castella Milk Cream Salt Bread that have been all over social media recently, we saw quite a different spread on our visit to the store.
The price of the Shio Pan ($4) is arguably a little steep for a regular bun, but the other options are more worth the price and journey down. The Nutella Salt Bread ($6.80) is dipped in Nutella then dusted with cocoa powder and chocolate chips for an all-around chocolatey affair. The Sarada Sausage Salt Bread ($6.80) features a sausage in the centre and melted cheese, a comforting pick for fans of the classic sausage rolls commonly found at HDB bakeries. Our fave, however, was the Corn Cheese Salt Bread ($6.50), with corn kernels giving a nice pop of sweetness and texture.
Noci Bakehouse is located at Suntec City, Tower 3, 3 Temasek Boulevard, #01-604/605, Singapore 038983. Visit its Instagram to find out more.
7. Barcook Bakery
Barcook Bakery first started as a stall in Hong Lim Complex but has since expanded to a total of 10 locations around Singapore. A bakery offering old-school buns, it has managed to combine the traditional taste of kaya into the trendy shio pan bun for a best seller. The Kaya Shio Pan ($2.50) is sweet without taking away from the quintessential salted bread flavour, appealing to our taste buds and our nostalgia. If you ever visit one of their outlets, we recommend this one.
The Cheese Shio Pan ($2.60) is visually reminiscent of the cheese buns in most bakeries with melted cheese on top. The regular Shio Pan ($2.40) was light and airy, top quality for a chain-bakery option.
Barcook Bakery has multiple locations across Singapore, including Clarke Quay Central, Nex, Pasir Ris Mall, Hillion Mall and Novena Square 2. Visit its website or Instagram page for more information.
8. Tiong Bahru Bakery
Tiong Bahru Bakery is one of the names we think of when considering croissant and sourdough options in Singapore, but there are a slew of other bakes available as well. That includes shio pans, which were introduced to the menu a little under a year ago. The variety spotlights innovative twists to the Japanese bread that lean both sweet and savoury.
Those with a sweet tooth can try the Blueberry, Cream Cheese Shio Pan ($4.50) or the Classic Cream Shio Pan ($4.50), loaded with light cream and dusted with icing sugar. Chasing a flavour from your childhood? The Milo Dinosaur Shio Pan ($4.50) is the go-to.
If you are more partial to salty-umami flavours, the Spring Onion, Cream Cheese Shio Pan ($4.50) comes with a generous serving of marinated spring onion for an added depth of flavour. The Hot Honey & Parmesan Shio Pan ($4.50) is perfect for those who like a bit of a spicy kick.
Those chasing more complex flavour profiles can look towards the Maple, Bacon & Pecan Shio Pan ($5) that combines sweet, savoury, nutty, and salty. If you want to really treat yourself, the Prosciutto Crudo Shio Pan ($9) comes stuffed with cured ham and lettuce, the bread of choice being the Hot Honey & Parmesan Shio Pan.
Note: some items, such as the Milo Dinosaur Shio Pan and Maple, Bacon & Pecan Shio Pan, and more are seasonal items and may not be available.
Tiong Bahru Bakery has multiple locations around Singapore, including Wisma Atria, Plaza Singapura, Raffles City, Vivocity, Joo Chiat and Jem. Visit its website and Instagram for more information.
9. Bread & Butter by XY
What started as a home-based bakery in 2020 grew into a brick-and-mortar business that accepts walk-ins, reservations (with a two-day lead time), deliveries, pick-ups, and even catering for events. One item that has contributed to the bakery’s rise in popularity is undoubtedly its shio pan.
Pulling apart with a satisfying crunch, this shio pan is everything you’d want. Soft on the inside, a generous amount of butter, a super crispy exterior, and just the right amount of saltiness that has you going back for another bite. We highly recommend reserving your spot and bakes in advance as these sell like hot cakes.
An extra bit of information: the shio pans are egg-free! You can purchase one for $2.90 or a box of six for $17.90.
Bread & Butter by XY is located at Oxley Tower, 138 Robinson Road, #01-04, Singapore 068906. Visit its website or Instagram for more information.
10. Alice Boulangerie & Restaurant
Alice Boulangerie & Restaurant’s Shio Pan ($2.73 each, $9.81 for four) may look out of place among the other artistic creations on the menu, but we can confirm that the taste makes it deserving of a place in-store. At a decent price point, these shio pans are super soft in the centre, giving them an airy texture.
For an elevated take, the Kombu Shio Pan (one for $3.60, box of four for $13.08) is an umami bomb with the kombu butter soaking the centre and roasted seaweed flakes loading the top. We recommend pre-ordering in advance to avoid any disappointment.
Alice Boulangerie & Restaurant is located at Icon Village, 12 Gopeng Street, #01-05/11, Singapore 078877, and Raffles City Shopping Centre, 252 North Bridge Road, #01-22A, Singapore 179103. Visit its website or Instagram for more information.
