With the Dragon Boat Festival coming up on June 19, 2026, restaurants and hotels are rolling out rice dumplings in all kinds of new, inventive flavours for those looking to try something different. But if you’re more of a traditionalist, there’s no shortage of options either.

From classic rice dumplings rooted in time-honoured recipes to familiar flavour twists like pork belly with preserved vegetables, here’s where to get your favourites this year — plus the deals you can still take advantage of.

When is the Dragon Boat Festival and why do we celebrate it?

Also known as Duanwu Jie (端午节), the Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. In 2026, it’s observed on June 19.

The festival is most commonly linked to Qu Yuan, a poet and statesman from ancient China’s Warring States period. Legend has it that after he drowned himself in protest against political corruption and the fall of his state, locals raced out in boats to search for him and tossed rice into the water to keep fish away from his body. These traditions are believed to have evolved into today’s dragon boat races and the eating of rice dumplings, or zongzi.

Today, the festival is both a cultural commemoration and a family occasion, marked by communal meals, festive foods, and dragon boat racing across many Chinese communities.
