You can expect to pony up approximately $4, and its highly snackable goreng pisang is also worth a try.

Chao Yang Fishball Noodle

If you’re thinking of patronising this popular stall, visit early in the morning if possible as it often sells out before closing time. The standout ingredient here is the homemade fish dumplings, which come as part of a dish (around $5) featuring your pick of noodles coated in a moreish sauce and dusted with pork lard cubes, as well as fish balls, fishcake slivers and tau pok crammed with fish paste, all swimming in a bowl of soup.

Other dishes include mee goreng, murtabak and roti john, and you can anticipate paying upwards of about $4 for a hearty meal.

Fen Xiang Fried Kway Teow

In business for over 30 years and counting, Fen Xiang Fried Kway Teow has been a mainstay at this hawker centre, with the popularity and seemingly perpetual queue to match. Fork out approximately $4 for a glorious mess of noodles, fishcake slices, Chinese sausage, egg and beansprouts tossed together in a delectable, slightly sweet sauce. Those who like it hot can add chilli sauce before digging in.

Hai Xian Zhi Jia

Hai Xian Zhi Jia, which makes comforting fish soup, is ideal for warming up on a cold and rainy day. You’ll receive a bowl of light, umami-rich broth filled with firm and thick slabs of fresh fish, bitter gourd slices, tofu cubes and some leafy greens, which pairs well with white rice. A meal here will set you back around $5 and above, and you can also order the likes of seafood soup, scallop soup and fried fish soup.

Fu Chun Laksa & Lor Mee

If you’re in the mood for some lor mee, pay a visit to this stall. Fork out about $5 for a portion of noodles, fried fish, pork belly, braised egg and other ingredients bobbing about in a viscous and starchy gravy. We recommend adding condiments like minced garlic, chilli padi and black vinegar to balance out the rich flavours. It serves laksa as well, if that’s more up your alley.

Chwee Kueh

This simply named establishment, which has been run by a hawker couple for over 20 years, makes classic glutinous rice cakes that make for a wonderful snack. The chwee kueh has a great texture – dense and firm discs with a pleasing chew – and is crowned with the requisite dollop of preserved radish. Add a scoop of chilli sauce if you wish, and anticipate ponying up under $2 for a serving.

Eng Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice & Porridge

It’s not easy to say no to a plate of chicken rice, and you can grab it here at Eng Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice & Porridge. Our pick is the roasted chicken rice set meal (roughly $6). You’ll get a mound of fragrant, flavourful rice with tender pieces of chicken drizzled with sauce, a braised egg and leafy greens. Those who want porridge can sample the shredded chicken porridge instead.

Kayu Manees

One of the newest vendors at the food centre is Kayu Manees, which opened for business at the end of 2022. Indonesian dishes are the name of the game, with different ayam bakar variations to select from. We recommend getting the generously portioned ayam bakar belado with either rice or noodles. Both feature a large marinated chicken thigh, fresh vegetables and assorted homemade sambals, and retail for approximately $7 each.
