While we sometimes think of the entirety of Europe as a monolith, the cultures of each nation actually vary a lot. For example, the food culture of Germany features heavy use of pork that translates to dishes such as roasted pork knuckles and sausages from bratwurst to weisswurst. Beer is another staple as the alcohol has been brewed for centuries as a way of having access to clean, drinking water before sanitation was a thing. Then there are the moreish pretzels with their satisfying chew and the sauerkraut that adds a tang to cut through the richness of the meal. Ready to eat? Here are 10 German restaurants in Singapore to visit.

Park Bäckerei

Founded by Dennis Von Berlepsch and his wife Jane Lee Richard, Park Bäckerei opened its doors in August 2023 to offer lye-dipped pretzels made by hand. The pretzels available here are nothing like what you find at fast food chain Auntie Anne's but are instead the traditional German kind (specifically, Swabian) that are substantive and chewy while retaining fluffy and crispy qualities at the same time. Besides pretzels, there are stuffed bagels, both sweet and savoury (and a spicy jalapeno cheddar one that doles out quite the kick), pretzel-dough sandwiches filled with bratwurst, sauerkraut and more as well as desserts.

Park Bäckerei is at 12 Gopeng St, #01-41/42 and 52/53, Singapore 078877. Visit its website for more information.

Hans Im Glück

Hans Im Glück is a German burger chain founded in 2010 in Munich that draws its name from a Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Burgers are made either with beef or grilled chicken breast and come with a slew of toppings ranging from various cheeses to bacon and fig jam. There is a selection of vegetarian burgers too, alongside salads and soups. But if you aren't up for burgers, there are common German mains such as Cheese Spätzle, German Currywurst and Pork Knuckle.

The beer washes down the accompanying Bavarian fare ranging from pretzels and sausages to roasted meats and schnitzels. Big eaters can consider getting the Paulaner Bräuhaus Platter that comes with pork knuckle, sausages, chicken schnitzel, meatloaf, pork and beef patties, mashed potatoes, grilled bread dumpling slices and Paulaner dark beer sauce. Vegetarians aren't left out either as there are meatless options.
