It's easy to Google for cake recommendations, but finding a good halal cake might not be as easy as you think. Panicking because your kid's birthday is coming soon, but you don't have time to sift through tens of pages of Google search? The good news is, we have rounded them up for you.

Here are 12 halal-certified and Muslim-owned bakeries where you can get your birthday cakes, from character-themed creations to indulgent classics, whether custom or off-the-shelf. Do take note of the lead time needed for custom cakes, which varies from shop to shop.

1. Prima Deli

You might be familiar with bakery chain Prima Deli for its crispy old-school waffles, but did you know that its cakes are just as delectable? Don't be fooled by their simple designs — the cakes are fluffy, not too sweet, and don't have a cloying aftertaste. And they are halal! My favourite is the peach and longan cake because the fruits give a refreshing burst of flavour that you don't usually get with celebratory cakes, and the buttercream doesn't overpower the taste of the fruits. This one will be a hit among the elderly who might not like rich options like chocolate cake. You can place your order on the website or in-store.

Visit Prima Deli's website for more information and a list of locations.

2. Fluff Bakery

Fluff Bakery is known for its cupcakes, but this Muslim-owned bakery also has a selection of cakes that are not only delicious but pretty. If you're a fan of Ferrero Rocher, you might like the Ferrero Rocher Cake, a chocolate mud cake layered with milk chocolate cream, hazelnut praline feuilletine, and lashings of Nutella. Be warned, though, if you don't have a sweet tooth, you might find it too sweet for your liking.

Whole cakes are available only if you order in advance. There's also an ondeh-ondeh cake (pandan cake with coconut cream and gula melaka), which will be a hit among both kids and adults. While you're there, pick up a bottle of the Crunchy Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies, which is one of the best I have tried.

Muslim owned.

3. Emicakes

Love durian cakes, and looking for a halal option? Try the durian cakes from Emicakes. In fact, you can even choose between the D24 and Mao Shan Wang! If you're expecting guests who are vegetarians or are allergic to eggs, Emicakes has an eggless option for the D24 cake. They even have a D24 crepe mille cake, if you're looking for something different from the regular sponge cake.

Durian cakes aside, there are adorable 3D cakes as well as custom-designed cake options that'll leave little ones delighted.

Halal certified. Eggless cakes are available.

4. Polar Puffs & Cakes

If your son or daughter loves Hello Kitty, My Melody or DC Comics characters, you're in luck because you can get a character cake without burning a hole in your wallet at this halal-certified bakery with outlets all over Singapore. It offers a variety of designs, with prices starting from $5.90 for a mini size. There's also a selection of Despicable Me and tokidoki designs. The great thing about its affordability and mini sizes is that if you have twins, they can each get a character they like instead of having to share or compromise!

5. Mizartlane

Want a tiny cake that's just enough for you and your kid, but want it customised? Why not try bento cakes? Like the name suggests, these cakes are made to fit inside a bento box (usually around 4 inches). Mizartlane on Instagram and TikTok is a Muslim-owned home-based business that specialises in bento cakes. You can specify the design you want, including graphics, and watch her make magic! This is a good way to celebrate your kid's birthday without them getting a sugar high, because we all know the kid will continue asking for cake as long as it's in their line of sight.

Love cheesecake, but craving something different from a New York or Oreo cheesecake for a special occasion? Get Cat & The Fiddle on your radar. This halal-certified bakery is known for its Milo Dinosaur cake, which might sound like eating a year's supply of sugar, but it is not as sweet as you'd imagine, thanks to the cheesecake base. Can't decide which flavour to get? Go for the "Make Your Own Fickle" cake, which allows you to choose 10 sliced cakes of different flavours to make your own creation. A godsend for an indecisive person like me.

7. Cake Spade

One look at the cake menu on the website, and you'll probably not be able to decide which cake you want to go for. And we totally get you. If you're looking for flavours that are not your typical birthday cake flavours, look no further than this halal-certified bakery. Want something that looks very aesthetic? Go for the Flower Pot Cake. Like cheesecake but don't fancy the cloying aftertaste? Try their signature tofu cheesecake. We tried the strawberry tofu cheesecake, and we found it light and refreshing! They also have other flavours, such as peach and mango. If you really can't decide, get the Assorted Cake Platter, which allows you to choose up to 10 different flavours!

8. Butter Studio

Is your kid still in their Labubu craze phase? Surprise them with a Labubu cake! This halal-certified bakery not only offers a six-inch cake adorned with the character's image, but also cute Labubu cupcakes! Apart from The Monsters, Butter Studio also has "trendy" flavours, such as Dubai Chocolate Pistachio Cake, and Strawberry Matcha Cake. We're not sure if the latter will be up the kids' alley, but you probably opt for this if your party comprises mostly adults and babies who can't have cake yet.

Halal-certified. Nut-free and vegan choices available for custom cakes.

9. Pinch Bakehouse

If you recall your first few birthday celebrations, you probably had a sheet cake with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Care Bears on it. Bring back the nostalgia for your kid's birthday with the Edible Photo Sheet Cake, where you can have your kid's face or a family photo on the cake. Otherwise, opt for a custom cake, whether Minecraft-themed or with bears and dinosaurs. Too fancy? This halal-certified also has chocolate cakes, ondeh-ondeh cakes, and strawberry cakes, if you prefer to stay on the safe side. If you opt for a custom cake, you can also choose nut-, egg-, dairy-, and gluten-free options, and even customise the packaging. E-mail or WhatsApp them to place an order.

10. Swee Heng

You might have seen Swee Heng in malls or even in your neighbourhood, and possibly tried their breads. But did you know that this halal-certified bakery has a good selection of cakes too? From the safe choice of Blackforest Cake to the more modern Red Velvet Strawberry Cheesecake, you'll find something that will tickle your fancy. If you're a fan of anything salted caramel, we recommend the Salted Caramel Cake. The cake is coated with salted caramel ganache, which honestly reminds us of Ferrero Rocher, but with a salty kick.

11. Two Bake Boys

Think this bakery was started by two men (or boys) who love baking? You can't be more wrong. The owner is a former flight stewardess and mother of two boys (hence the name), who started a home-based baking business during the Covid-19 pandemic when flights were grounded. She started baking as a bonding activity with her two boys during the Circuit Breaker, and eventually became a home baker, selling Thai milk tea crepe cakes. She has since opened a store at Shaw Plaza, and expanded her cake menu to include other flavours of crepe cakes as well as shortcakes.

12. Angalia's

Your kid has a big idea of how they want their birthday cake to look like, but unfortunately, you can't bake. Luckily, you can leave it to the professionals like the folks at Angalia's to make it happen. A scroll through their Instagram and you know that this Muslim-owned bakery will likely be able to make your kid's dream cake become a reality. The extravagant designs are perfect for milestone birthdays, and also make for great photo ops. Prices vary according to design, and orders can be placed via WhatsApp.
