Chinese New Year is not complete without this sesame peanut candy, which also brings back fond childhood memories. The traditional recipe only requires a handful of ingredients, and takes little to no time to make.

Yield: Serves 24
Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins
Difficulty Level: 2/5

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • ⅓ cup white vinegar
  • 1 tbsp water
  • ½ cup toasted sesame seeds
  • 1½ cup unsalted roasted peanuts (without red skins)

Steps

01. Combine sugar, vinegar and water in saucepan. Stir over low heat until sugar dissolves. Bring to boil; do not stir.

Boil mixture approximately 10 mins or until golden brown. To test, drop a little toffee in cold water; it should form a hard ball when moulded in the water with fingers.

03. While toffee is boiling, oil a 18 cm x 28 cm lamington tin. Sprinkle half the toasted sesame seeds and all the nuts over base of tin. Pour the hot toffee evenly over this.

04. Smooth surface over with the back of an oiled wooden spoon. Sprinkle over remaining sesames seeds, cool slightly. Cut candy into strips before it is completely cold.

TIP To toast sesame seeds, spread them on shallow tray, bake in a moderate oven 5 mins, or until golden.Photo: bauersyndication.com.au
