Not to be confused with its sour cousin, Assam Laksa, laksa is a spicy (both in terms of its heat and amount of spices) broth amped up with umami-rich shrimp paste and luscious coconut milk. While the soupy, comforting dish is most synonymous with a "Katong" label, there are actually many great hawker stalls serving laksa outside the eastern enclave. Ahead are 10 to check out right now.

328 Katong Laksa

1/10

We can't mention laksa without mentioning 328 Katong Laksa. Founded by Nancy Koh, the over two-decade-old establishment is likely the most famous of them all, having been featured by Martin Yan (of Yan Can Cook) and Gordon Ramsay. It was previously awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand too. Prices start from $6.30.

Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa

Not to be confused with the aforementioned brand, Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa was named by founder Daniel Soo to pay homage to the food vendors that used to peddle the dish along the road from their trishaws. A Michelin Bib Gourmand awardee, the store is definitely worth a visit. Prices start at $5.50.

Yishun 928 Laksa

5/10

Yishun might have an infamous reputation, but one thing they do good is laksa. The family-owned Yishun 928 Laksa actually began as a rojak stall with laksa as a side offering, but it later began to become the focus due to its popularity. Prices start at $3.

Zhen Shan Mei Laksa

6/10

Devotees might remember that the Michelin Bib Gourmand awardee Zhen Shan Mei used to serve its laksa in a claypot. Despite not doing so anymore, the stall founded by Ang Siew Yan over a decade ago (it is currently helmed by her nephew Mr Zhang) still pulls a crowd. Prices start at $4.50.
