Yet another croissant crossover has been rolled out

It seems like every now and then, we find innovative ways to turn the classic croissant into a newfangled creation. In recent years, we've had everything from the croffle (a portmanteau of 'croissant' and 'waffle') to the cruffin (croissant and muffin), the cronut (croissant and doughnut) to the spiral-shaped croissants (that have been named everything from 'croons' to 'circular croissants'). The latest croissant trend to hit our shores? The crookie — that's a cookie-croissant hybrid. The new fad, which is taking TikTok by storm, appears to have stemmed from Boulangerie Louvard, a bakery in Paris that combined its two signature bakes into one. What you get: the oozy softness of cookie dough combined with the flaky layers of the croissant. Here's where to try them.

1. French American Bakery

Muslim-owned establishment French American Bakery is best known for its range of pastries and viennoiserie, as well as hot chocolate topped with torched marshmallow that made rounds on social media last year. And now it's hopped on the crookie bandwagon with its iteration that comes as a flaky croissant filled and topped with soft chocolate chip cookie dough, and copious amounts of large chocolate chips.

French American Bakery is at 49 Haji Lane, Singapore 189242. Visit its Instagram page for updates.

Nasty Cookie recently introduced Nasty Bakehouse, a new concept that combines a cafe and a cookie store. Along with the new store, it has also rolled out a Nasty Crookie ($6.80 per piece or $16 for a box of three). The inside of the croissant oozes chocolate-laden cookie dough so you'll get all that melty goodness when you sink your teeth in.

Nasty Bakehouse is at #02 271 Marina Square, 6 Raffles Blvd, Singapore 039594. Visit its website for more information.

3. La Levain

Bakery-cafe La Levain's Crookie ($6.80) stars a delectable marriage of gooey, chocolatey cookie dough and rich cacao barry chocolate chips nestled within its signature French butter croissant. The latter is made using Elle & Vire French butter for a crisp, flaky, and buttery pastry, and to up the ante, melted dark chocolate is drizzled over. And if that's not enough, the bakery has also launched the Smashed Croissant, another inventive take on the classic viennoiserie, dipped in various toppings like Berry, Nutella and Speculoos.

Plus: La Levain shares that the flour in its cookie dough undergoes heat treatment, ensuring it's safe to enjoy while keeping its gooey deliciousness.

La Levain is at 23 Hamilton Road, Singapore 209193. Visit its website to order or for more information.

4. Sweedy Patisserie

Best known for indulgent fatcarons (macarons stuffed with extra filling) and delectable Mao Shan Wang durian cakes, Hougang cafe Sweedy Patisserie doles out a Crookie that comes almost fully covered in brown butter cookie dough. It's recommended that you dunk it in a cup of coffee for a delightful treat.

Sweedy Patisserie is at 377 Hougang St. 32, #01-32, Singapore 530377. Visit its website to order or for more information.

5. Swish Rolls

Instead of chocolate chip cookie dough, Swish Rolls is shaking things up with a Matcha Pistachio Mochi Crookie ($3.50). This sees a halved croissant filled with matcha pistachio cookie dough, chewy mochi, pistachio sauce, and a dusting of Uji matcha powder for extra earthy goodness.

That's not all it has up its sleeves. Apart from crookies, Swish Rolls has other imaginative takes on the croissant, including Croissant Egg Tarts and the seasonal Hot Cross Croissants for Easter.

Available at Swish Roll's Paragon outlet, or you can order on its website.

6. Breadtalk

Make a pitstop at your nearest Breadtalk outlet and you'll find the bakery chain has rolled out a version of the trend, too. Its version is presented as a rectangular pastry that appears to be embedded with a whole cookie. Apart from Chocolate Chip, it also has the option of Double Chocolate and Red Velvet for every sweet tooth to enjoy.

Breadtalk has multiple outlets islandwide. Visit its website for a list of locations.
