Even if you're not a die-hard Japanese food fan, you'd likely have seen viral clips of Kichi Kichi Omurice, famous for its omurice and its quirky chef-owner Motokichi Yukimura rocking his signature red beret. In Kyoto, scoring a seat in the 14-seater restaurant is next to impossible ("I refreshed the page and the slot was gone", someone told me). But here’s the good news: you can now (kind of) taste the magic in Singapore.

Chef Yukimura is in town for a special two-day showcase (July 11 and 12, 2025) at Tsukimi Hamburg restaurant in Jurong Point, a tie-up with home-grown food and beverage group RE&S Enterprises, which specialises in Japanese dining concepts. During this time, lucky draw winners will get to sit in for a cooking showcase and try his famous creation. While the lucky draw has ended, if you’re in the vicinity, you can still catch a glimpse of the chef from outside the restaurant (4pm to 5pm on both dates). Just, you know, don’t block the walkway.

I got a front-row seat to the whole spectacle and totally got what the hype is all about. Chef Yukimura sure knows how to put on a show, from fun theatrics like his signature "dong, dong, dong" as he tapped the frying pan on his wrist to fold the egg, to a playful ketchup bottle prank that had everyone giggling. And seriously, at 69 years old, he has more energy than all of us put together.

The three-egg omelette, which spills over the rice in a silky, jiggly cascade, is seasoned with just a sprinkling of salt. ("No butter, no milk, no cream," chef Yukimura proudly declared.) Beneath it, the rice is pleasantly chewy with savoury, slightly peppery notes, and the addition of chicken chunks and edamame brings both texture and heartiness. The demiglace, adapted to suit Tsukimi Hamburg while staying true to its original rich, slow-cooked version, is a star on its own (yes, I unabashedly sipped it by the spoonful). It's deep, rich, and adds extra oomph to the already tasty omelette and rice.

And while the original Kichi Kichi omurice (with the sliced omelette, above) won't be a permanent fixture here, you can try two exclusive Tsukimi Hamburg x Kichi Kichi Omurice dishes instead at Tsukimi Hamburg outlets here. These will be permanent additions to the menu.

First is the Kichi Kichi Hamburg Omurice ($16.80) featuring a generous mound of demiglace fried rice with chicken chunks and edamame. Then, of course, it's blanketed with Kichi Kichi's iconic wobbly omelette, with this iteration twisted in a spiral “tornado” shape. Crowning it is Tsukimi Hamburg's signature patty. Crafted with pork and Miyazaki beef, the thick patty is juicy, springy, and well-seasoned. The second dish is the Kichi Kichi Omurice, served without the patty, priced at $12.80.

Our verdict: At $16.80, the Kichi Kichi Hamburg Omurice in Singapore is satisfying and hits the spot as a comforting bite — the demiglace rice is tasty, the omelette is creamy and silky, and the patty is gratifyingly juicy. I'd happily have it again — just not if it involves standing in a long line. The real magic lies in Chef Yukimura’s entertaining performance, which is what made this dish go viral to begin with. And for that, you'd have to book a flight to Kyoto.

The Tsukimi Hamburg x Kichi Kichi Omurice dishes are now available at all three Tsukimi Hamburg outlets at #01-05 CapitaSpring, #02-25 Hougang Mall, and B1-52 Jurong Point.
