To check out this week: New fine-dining fusion restaurant Eclipse at Yue Hwa building, The Marmalade Pantry Petite's second outlet, Fairmont Singapore unveiled Chinese restaurant House of Wei and more.
Fusion restaurant Eclipse opens at Yue Hwa Building
There's a new gem on the rooftop of Chinatown's iconic Yue Hwa Building — Eclipse. The fine-dining restaurant is helmed by chef Samuel Quan, who's had stints at Les Amis, Joel Robuchon as well as the three Michelin-starred Aponiente in Spain. Drawing on his background in European fare and his own Asian heritage, he serves up artfully plated East-meets-West dishes that shine the spotlight on his favourite ingredients and spices.
Just as remarkable as the interiors, with a surreal canopy of cloud-like mesh covering the ceiling, is the menu, which marries unlikely flavours in brilliant ways. We went for the five-course Chef Tasting Menu that kicks off with canapes as well as a zesty hamachi (yellowtail) starter starring fresh fish, pickled ginger flower and crunchy Nashi pear.
Pumpkin and laksa is an unusual combination but which works marvellously in the Pumpkin Laksa soup that nestles a plump seafood tortellino. For mains, you get the Duo Beef with both a tender short rib in a tasty Hoisin sauce, as well as a Tajima Wagyu MBS 6 paired with Kampot pepper sauce. And to round off the meal, an 'Orh Nee' Milee Feuille with coconut ice cream that's an inventive and more subtle take on the traditional dessert — we'd wish for a stronger taro flavour but that's just the orh nee lover in us talking.
There are also a la carte dishes, including a flavourful must-try Iberico Pork Collar ($38++), as well as Crustacean Milk ($28++), with ginger-infused crab milk and Hokkaido scallops, Lobster Risotto ($42++) spiced up with green curry, and barramundi doused with black vinegar and chilli oil ($38++).
A five-course Chef Tasting Menu is at $168++. A three-course set lunch is at $52++. Eclipse is at #06-01 Yue Hwa Building, 70 Eu Tong Sen Street, Singapore 059805.
Following the first The Marmalade Pantry Petite, a casual quick-service joint serving café fare at Singapore Management University (SMU) earlier this year, The Marmalade Pantry has rolled out the second outlet in BHG at Bugis.
The 35-seater space is outfitted with full-height windows that look out to the street — perfect for whiling away an afternoon as you tuck into its array of delish offerings. The outlet boasts new highlights, including a new line-up of handcrafted tarts ($8.50++ each) such as Passionfruit Meringue, Chocolate Ruby, Lychee Rose, and Pecan.
There's also a Petite Afternoon Tea Set ($54++, good for two) as well as new sandwiches and salads, like Chilli Lime Prawn with Fusilli salad ($12++) and the Truffle Egg Mayo Croissant ($9.90++). Wash it down with tasty options from the extended beverage menu, such as Iced
Banoffee Latte ($7.50++) and refreshing coolers ($6.50++).
The Marmalade Pantry Petite is at #01-35, BHG Bugis Junction, 200 Victoria Street, Singapore 188021.
Fairmont Singapore has opened the doors to a new modern Chinese dining concept, House of Wei, which takes over the former Szechuan Court.
Master chef Mok Wan Lok helms the kitchen and weaves classic Chinese fare with both traditional and culinary techniques as well as ingredients. What to try? His signatures include Mok-Style Shanghainese Braised Lion Head (, Crispy Pork Rib Espresso Kahlua, Oven Roasted Black Cod with Soy & Balsamic Reduction and Jackfruit Sweet & Sour Chicken ($36++).
There's also an array of live seafood such as tiger prawns, red grouper, aquaponics-grown Jade Perch, Boston lobsters, and mud crabs. These can be prepared in seven different ways (steamed, Hong Kong-style or in the 'bi feng tang' style, for instance) and with special house sauces.
House of Wei is at Level 3, Fairmont Singapore, 80 Bras Basah Road, Singapore 189560. E-mail dining.singapore@fairmont.com or call 6431 6156 for reservations.
Fans of Old Airport Road Western BBQ's Hainanese Western food now have two new locations to get their fix, apart from its first Old Airport Road locale. The two new offshoots of the 47-year-old stall, founded by hawker William Lim, are helmed by his two children.
Apart from its well-loved chicken chop, chicken cutlet, and pork chop, there are new sides to make it a heartier meal like cheese fries ($3.50) and onion rings ($3.50). Other dishes to try are the Mixed Grill ($12), which comes with chicken, pork, lamb, fries, coleslaw, and an egg, as well as the Black Angus Beef Sirloin Steak ($12).
Soon to open on Dec 15 is its Jurong outlet, at 132 Jurong Gateway Road, which will serve up the same tasty fare.
Old Airport Road BBQ's new outlets are at 132 Jurong Gateway Road (Happy Hawkers Coffee Shop), Singapore 600132, and Blk 59 New Upper Changi Road, Singapore 461059.
