Where To Eat & Drink: Jumbo Seafood's Afternoon Tea, Unique Steaks & More
Our round-up of great dining spots to check out, fab drinks and the latest in food news this week
By Michelle Lee SM -
Always on the hunt for new dining spots? We bring you sound bites on where to eat, including new restaurant and eatery openings, the best places for your after-work tipple, and what’s new in the food scene.
Our picks this week: Unusual but sublime cuts of steak at the new Meadesmoore, Jumbo Seafood's afternoon tea set, Nespresso-infused delights at JW Marriott Singapore South Beach, and more.
If you're hankering for steak, there's a romantic new spot to check out — modern steakhouse Meadsmoore. Executive chef Victor Loy (formerly Fat Belly Social) is the main man behind the kitchen, and prides himself on showcasing unusual cuts of premium beef like flat iron, rib cap, and zabuton that are charcoal grilled.
Start with sharing plates like the kway chap-inspired Breaded Pig's Head ($18++), one that I'd recommend even less adventurous eaters to try. Crisp breaded nuggets house tender and flavourful slow-braised pig's head meat — tasty on their own even without the accompanying lemon mayo. Or try the Bone Marrow ($16++) with house-smoked Hokkigai clams and fried garlic gremolata atop jiggly bone marrow (great for spreading with the lovely toasted sourdough on the side). The spicy Baby Octopus Piperade ($24++), however, was a tad chewier than we'd prefer and could do with more punch.
Steaks are the main event at Meadesmoore. Take the rich, beefy 30 Days Dry Aged Galician MS 2/4 Prime Rib ($280++) for instance, a hefty 1kg steak made for sharing. It's served with salsa verde, scampi butter, and chorron sauce, but we say ditch the condiments. PSA: Scrape off the meat along the bone for charred, deeply flavourful bits.
For sides, order the Gratinated Mac & Cheese ($18++) which comes in a beautiful gooey sauce of white wine, leeks and four cheeses: Bleu, Grana Padano, mozzarella and a seasonal cheese. Macaroni is swapped for casarecce, a ridged pasta that holds the sauce and works marvellously. Watching your carb intake can always be left for another day.
Fancy dessert? Meadesmoore's seasonal take on the Eton Mess ($16++), is a dreamy concoction of rose and raspberry chantilly cream studded with meringue kisses, raspberry, and lychee. Otherwise, the Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate ($16++), a medley of chocolate ganache, custard, crumble and tuile paired with a chocolate and whisky sorbet and lifted with a dash of salt, makes for a decadent end to the meal.
Meadesmoore is at 21A Boon Tat St, Singapore 069620. Visit its website for reservations or more information.
Here's some food for thought: Our daily food choices can have an impact on the environment and global warming.
With Earth Day on 22 April, the Super Loco Group is driving the message with a carbon-conscious Earth Month menu that's a tie-up with Australian plant-based start-up Fable Food. Available as a four-course dinner set menu ($80++ per person) or as a la carte specials, the dishes aren't just friendlier to the planet, they're delicious too.
Take for instance the Garden Flautas ($19++), which sees crisp, flaky spinach herb tortillas stuffed with Mexican truffle, quinoa and goat cheese atop a bed of nutty sikil pak dip made from excess pumpkin seeds. Or the Fable Al Pastor Taco ($10++), with slow-braised mushroom 'meat' atop a pliable bamboo ash tortilla and drizzled with chipotle mayo. Crispy kale and watermelon slices add a textural crunch.
Sustainably farmed barramundi from local fishery Kühlbarra star in the menus, and are prepared differently at Super Loco's different outlets. Over at Super Loco Customs House, you'll get the firm and tender Barramundi ($34++), crisped on one side and brightened with zesty salsa verde, alongside a lively herb salad.
A traditional dessert, the Pomegranate Tres Leches ($14++) gets a tangy twist with pomegranate gelee mitigating the richness of the milk sponge, coconut cream, and tres leches sauce. If you're in the mood for a tipple, sip on the Zero to Hero ($21++), a zero-waste cocktail that turns fruit offcuts into a heady but refreshing tequila infusion.
Plus: With every set menu purchased, diners can adopt a tree under their name through Super Loco Group’s ongoing tree-planting exercise that aids reforestation efforts across Borneo’s endangered rainforests. And the group will match every adopted tree by planting its own.
The Earth Month menu is available from now till April 30, 2022. Visit Super Loco Group's website for reservations or more information.
Nespresso and JW Marriott Singapore South Beach serve up coffee-infused treats
JW Marriott Singapore South Beach has joined hands with Nespresso to curate Nespresso-centric dining experiences that will appeal to java-loving fiends at three of its restaurants: Madame Fan, Akira Back, and Beach Road Kitchen. We swung by Beach Road Kitchen to sample The Art of Afternoon Tea affair, with savoury and sweet morsels laced with coffee.
Savouries include the sweet-meets-savoury Chocolate “Origin Brazil” Duck Rillettes with a distinct coffee aroma, and the bold Truffle Kaya Toast, "Nespresso Guatemala". But, while delicious, any hint of coffee was overshadowed by the richness of the foie gras in the“Origin Peru Organic” Tart.
For Nespresso coffee-infused sweets, you get the Vanilla “Origin Guatemala” Coffee Caramel Tart and the decadent Origin Peru Organic Coffee Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse. There are also other bites that aren't infused with coffee, like a fluffy pistachio strawberry Swiss roll, lobster tartare in a charcoal pastry shell, and a lemon almond gateau.
Beverage-wise, there's a range of Nespresso coffee, of course. But you can also opt for a selection of TWG tea. Dine-in and you'll also be able to enjoy a thick creamy lobster bisque and a quiche, served complimentary with the set.
$40++ person, available from now till May 31, 2022. Beach Road Kitchen is at 30 Beach Rd, Singapore 189763. Visit its website for reservations or more information.
