We recently spoke to Australian fitness guru and trainer, Kayla Itsines to learn more about her new Sweat app, find out how she got started on her fitness journey and what it was like for her to work with tech giant, Apple.
Kayla was recently in Singapore as part of Fitness Fest by AIA. She also taught a class of her popular Bikini Body Guide as part of the festival.

I’ve always been interested in being fit and healthy. I used to play a lot of sport at school, and loved how good being active made me feel. Since then I’ve continued to prioritise my fitness, and it’s a key part of my life. Whether its training in the gym or walking my dogs with my family, I make sure I am active everyday. I set milestones to keep myself motivated, and then check in on my progress to see how far I have come.
At the moment I’m using my BBG Stronger program available within the Sweat app, and am loving the new challenges that have just been introduced.
Walking is one of the best forms of exercise you can do. It’s low impact and perfect for those at the start of their health and fitness journey. I recommend starting small, a walk around the block can build up to a walk around your neighbourhood. It’s also something that’s fun to do with a friend or training buddy.
The fitness industry has come a long way with this, however some women are still afraid to use weights and there is the misconception that they are for men only.
I want to encourage all women to feel confident using weights and machines at the gym. My BBG Stronger program is specifically designed to show you how to safely use these machines, and walk into the gym with confidence. Building strength is equally as important for women and as it is for men.
Underestimating portion control can contribute to weight gain. Even if you are eating the right foods, being too generous in your portion size and accidentally overeating can see your results slow down.
The meal plans within my BBG and BBG Stronger programs in the Sweat app are all nutritionally balanced and portion controlled, to help keep you on track.
I don’t ever want to make women feel like they need to deprive themselves of foods they enjoy, so instead I want women to focus on enjoying them in moderation. This includes both healthy foods like avocado and nuts, as well as not so healthy options like chocolate.
Instead of eating a whole block of chocolate, just have a few bites so you can still enjoy the flavour, or swap it out for something sweet like berries, or a cup of tea with honey. Another way to enjoy food in moderation is to share it! If you want to try a new dessert at your favourite restaurant, share it with a friend.
Tobi, (Sweat CEO), launched the Sweat app in May 2017, after he recognised an opportunity to further support women on their health and fitness journeys by offering them all the tools they need at their fingertips. The app provides women with a complete offering including workout programs, rehabilitation, nutritional advice and support and encouragement from the amazing Sweat community of over 35 million women worldwide.
The Sweat app includes my BBG and BBG Stronger programs, as well as BAM (Body and Mind) with trainer Sjana Elise, and PWR and Post-Pregnancy with trainer Kelsey Wells. We recently launched some really cool features in May 2018, including audio cues, which bring users even closer to a personal training experience, as well as warm up activities, and a new challenge feature (my favourite!).
Apple has been incredibly supportive and encouraging of Tobi and I on this journey, and through the development of the Sweat app have helped make our vision come to life. We both look forward to some exciting new updates in the future!
Using the Sweat app on my Apple Watch makes it so easy to see where I am up to in my workout, and I can easily swipe to the next move, and find out information on any move modifications or alternatives. Plus, if I’m tired of what I’m listening to I can easily skip to the next track on my Apple Music playlist. I also use the stopwatch function when I train my clients, it makes it all so much easier as everything is in one place.
Technology and social media have helped Sweat to reach over 35 million women around the world, which is just incredible! When I started as a Personal Trainer with a small group of clients I could never have imagined that one day I would get the opportunity to help so many women on their health and fitness journeys around the world.
honestly can’t think of any one particular celebrity or athlete I would want to train. I would however love to have some training sessions with my mum, she stays active and walks my dogs with me but I’d love to help her get stronger and use weights.
I don’t believe in ‘cheat days’, but a ‘cheat meal’ can actually be helpful if you have started a new eating plan and are struggling to adjust to a healthier diet. For me, my favourite indulgence would be one of my Yia Yia’s Greek cakes, along with a Greek coffee, delicious.
