As someone who’s had the unfortunate luck of having oily skin, and in turn, an oily scalp, living in Singapore has been no joke. While an oily skin condition does have its benefits — such as a thicker skin dermis and fewer wrinkles — the year-round humidity and heat that comes with living in a tropical climate does make it hard to enjoy them.
When one has an oily scalp, what happens is that the sebaceous glands start to produce excess oil. While sebum does help to protect our skin and scalp from outside damage and strengthen the barrier of our skin, too much of it can be damaging.
Oily scalps are one of the most common hair concerns, especially in South-east Asian countries. This is because an excessively oily scalp can cause the sebum glands to clog the pores in our scalp, causing issues such as irritation, itchiness, dandruff, and the worst of the lot — permanent hair loss.
Hair loss is rampant in humid countries like Singapore due to our constant movement between the outside heat and air-conditioned buildings. This causes the oil and sebum building up to dry and harden, making it tough to remove with generic hair care products, even if you wash your hair every day.
While stress, diet, sleep patterns and hormonal changes can all contribute to the health of your hair, it’s still important to get your scalp deep cleansed and detoxed every now and then. Which is why when I was offered to try out TK Trichokare’s award-winning Hair & Scalp Treatment, I leapt at the chance.
Here’s how it went:
