Probiotics — commonly found in foods yogurt, cheese and kimchi — are known to be great for gut health. But did you know that fermented foods could also be an answer for clearer skin?
French pharmacist Marie Drago discovered firsthand the efficacy of ‘good’ bacteria after being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease (which causes inflammation of the digestive tract). She had to undergo an intensive course of antibiotics, but it was only until after starting a probiotic-rich diet that she felt a dramatic change in her physical and mental health, and this led her on a journey to study microbiomes.

Known as “little life” in Greek, microbomes are the microorganisms that belong to a habitat or community. Just like the gut with its own microbiomes, the skin also has a microbial world that can be impacted by different things like stress, pollution and more. Probiotics naturally have an anti-inflammatory effect, which is in turn can soothe and protect skin.
In this exclusive interview, we speak to Drago and ask her about the benefits of bacteria and how her brand Gallinée came to be.
Marie Drago (MD): Gallinée is a French pharmacy brand created in 2016. We are the first brand to focus on the microbiome of the skin, thanks to a patented cocktail of pre, pro and postbiotics. The products are made for everyone, but especially for people with sensitive skin or skin prone to eczema. In addition to our face care range, we also have body care, scalp care, intimate care and oral care!
MD: I grew up with an autoimmune disease and went through a lot of heavy treatment. However, it was not helping, so I decided to switch up my routine and focus on a probiotic and prebiotic focused diet. This switch proved effective, inspiring the revolutionary idea of “if consuming probiotics and prebiotics can do so much for our gut, why is no one taking care of the bacteria on our skin”. Turning this bad situation to a good one, I am now proud to be the pioneer of microbiome skincare, helping others out there with sensitive skin like mine.
MD: I really love our Cleansing Bar. Cleansing is not always good for your microbiome, so it’s key to have a very gentle cleanser. I live in London, where we have high levels of pollution so our Cleansing Bar is perfect for that. Since I’m a light packer, I use it for my face, body, intimate hygiene and even to wash my hair!
MD: For makeup I only use Beauty Pie, the brand created by Marcia Kilgore after Bliss and Soap & Glory. I am slightly obsessed with their high quality products at factory prices. I love everything grapefruit, so I also use the grapefruit lip balm of Burt’s Bee, and my perfume is Pomelo Paradis from Atelier Cologne. All the rest is pretty much only Gallinée products.
MD: Cheese of course! As a French person it’s so great to see that my favourite food is rich in probiotics. I also love kombucha (I even try to make my own) and water kefir. I discovered Kimchi-Cheese grilled sandwiches and it might be my favourite food on earth.
Prebiotics are of course also very important, and in food you find them a lot with fibres. So I try to eat 30 different plants a week – research shows it’s the best thing you can do for your gut microbiome.
MD: I love the humble Lactobacillus, it’s been the friend of mankind for thousands of years. It’s great for the gut and the skin.
The most poetic bacteria for me is a cute Streptomycete that lives in the soil and produces geosmin when wet. It’s the smell of earth after it rains!
MD: Our products have not yet been specifically tested on pregnant women. However, they have been developed for sensitive or even very sensitive skin types and do not contain any ingredients that could cause reactions. As always, it’s best to check with your doctor.
MD: I used to be plagued with eye bags and dark circles, until one day one journalist told me “just stop rubbing your face with a towel, especially under the eyes”. It fixed it so quickly! I loved this piece of advice as it was so simple that it doesn’t involve beauty products – super efficient, just how I like it!
MD: Listen to your gut! It’s funny because I always thought it was just about instinct. But lately science has been saying your microbiome also sends information to your brain, it’s called the gut brain axis. So listening to your gut is also a great way to improve your mental health!
