Supplement subscriptions, at-home testing kits and plant-based products galore

by Rachel Eva Lim  /   December 15, 2021

As we stand on the cusp of a brand-new year, chances are that many of us are reflecting on 2021 and setting new benchmarks for 2022 – be it in terms of our career trajectories, relationships with loved ones or health and fitness journeys.

If you plan on putting a renewed focus on your wellness in the upcoming year – perhaps by prioritising your mental health, switching to more plant-based sources of protein or finding and sticking to a better supplement routine – then you’re in luck. Read on for our predictions of 2022 trends that you can harness to achieve your wellness goals.

Even more plant-based alternatives to try

Whether you’re trying to cut down on your meat consumption for health reasons or reduce your carbon footprint by making more sustainable dietary choices, you can tap into an array of exciting plant-based alternatives.

The past few months alone have seen a clutch of new options make their debuts in Singapore, including Good Catch’s legume-based seafood products and Impossible Pork, which rolled out across more than 120 restaurants. And the trend shows zero signs of slowing down. The global market is anticipated to be worth over US$162 billion by 2030, so we expect to see even more entrants in 2022.

This will include plant-based offerings by local company Growthwell Foods: think substitutes for well-loved favourites including chicken nuggets, salmon patties and fish fingers.

Customised supplement subscription services

We all know the importance of taking our vitamins. But it can be tricky to figure out the exact line-up of products to incorporate without some guidance, and generic store-bought options – such as one-size-fits-all multivitamins – may not address your unique needs.

Enter supplement subscription services that create a tailored assortment of products based on each customer’s individual requirements. This includes Singapore-based Moom, which is specially geared towards Asian women. It devises a daily vitamin pack based on your answers to an expert-backed questionnaire, and delivers these nifty little sachets to your doorstep each month.

Such convenience when it comes to wellness will be paramount in 2022, especially as the economy continues to reopen and our lives become even busier.

At-home testing kits – and not just for Covid-19

Sticking a cotton swab into our nostrils to test for Covid-19 is second nature to many of us by now. But besides at-home testing kits that ensure we’re not infected with the virus, there are others that can ascertain everything from an individual’s risk for genetic mutations to food allergies to sexual health.

In line with the recent rise in popularity of telemedicine, we anticipate more people using these convenient, consumer-friendly products next year as an alternative to schlepping all the way to the doctor’s office.

Many companies offer genetic-testing kits that can reveal insights into your ancestry, genetic makeup and how your DNA may determine particular health traits. Meanwhile, others are engineered to identify dietary intolerances, which can allow you to plan your food intake more optimally.

Smart clothing to track your vitals and optimise your performance

Global clothing behemoth H&M recently announced that it’s looking into developing smart clothing that can monitor everything from heart rate to hydration levels.

Although textile-centric wearables haven’t taken off in the same way as fitness trackers, we see this as the next stage in real-time, electronic health maintenance – and a market that could very well take off next year.

While H&M and other start-ups are constantly researching and rolling out new smart clothing, there are quite a few existing options on the market. Wearable X makes yoga pants with built-in vibrations that help you correct your form; swimsuits from Spinali Design track exposure to UV rays; and Under Armour’s UA Recover line contains a mineral-infused fabric that reflects your body heat back into your muscles for better recovery.

A greater emphasis on mental health, particularly at work
image

In a recent survey by The Straits Times, 76% of respondents reported feeling sad or depressed. Indeed, the stress, burnout, loneliness and anxiety associated with Covid-19 forced many of us take a good, hard look at the state of our mental well-being.

Looking ahead, the emphasis on mental health is set to continue into 2022 and beyond, with individuals choosing to prioritise this all-important aspect of overall well-being – such as by signing up for therapy, drawing firmer boundaries and engaging in mindful activities including meditation.

This philosophy extends to the workplace, too. Be it by investing in comprehensive mental health support or implementing more sustainable ways of working, organisations will have to seriously prioritise mental health in order to attract and retain good employees.

Brands using adaptogens to make creative beverages

Adaptogens – plant-based substances such as herbs and mushrooms that may help to combat stress and boost energy levels – are likely to play an even greater role in 2022’s wellness landscape.

But rather than simply consuming them in pill form, you can enjoy them as part of innovative drinks. In Singapore, you can get your fix at EGA Juice Clinic, which infuses its products with ashwagandha, turmeric and guduchi. Alternatively, you may choose to sample Wild Boocha’s Harmony Adaptogenic kombucha that’s made with ashwagandha, tulsi and amla; or pick up a bottle of AMASS’ Dry Gin, which includes ashwagandha and reishi mushroom.

Meanwhile, the Bella Hadid-backed Kin offers adaptogen-infused, non-alcoholic drinks that are designed to either enhance concentration or mitigate stress.

Disclaimer: Some of these products may not be suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medications or have underlying conditions. When in doubt, consult your doctor before incorporating new elements into your wellness routine.
