You would hope that in this day and age, a woman’s worth could be judged by her achievements…and not just about what she wears. But of course this isn’t so. Celebrities get it all the time, which must make it pretty hard when you’re just a normal woman.
The one thing we applaud though is celebrities using their platforms to fight back against these haters. Here are a few choice words they’ve used against body-shaming and unrealistic standards of beauty. Keep some of them in mind next time someone oversteps.
At the start of her modelling career, this supermodel was criticised about everything — from her weight to her walk.
Hard work has made her one of the top models on the runways now. But even now Gigi’s down-to-earth mentality helps her keep her cool.
She told E! News in January, “I’m all for one month of going really hard and eating really healthy and boxing every day if you’re doing it for one job, but I’ve always said, ‘Eat clean to stay fit, have a burger to stay sane.'”
Besides her inspiring speech at the MTV Music Awards focused on her daughter and body image, the pop superstar has always taken a clear stand especially with Internet trolls and haters.
When people commented on one of her red carpet choices, she replied, “While I admit that that dress didn’t photograph as well as it did in my kitchen, I will also admit that I felt very pretty. In fact, I felt beautiful. So, my good and concerned peoples, please don’t worry about me. I’m not worried about me. And I’m not worried about you either… I am perfectly fine, perfectly happy, and my healthy voluptuous and crazy strong body is having some much deserved time off.”
The most-followed star on Instagram is courageously open about her mental health struggles and won’t put up with haters anywhere.
When an Instagram user made offensive remarks about her weight, Selena responded with a photo post captioned, “I love being happy with me y’all #theresmoretolove.”
The writer, producer and star of The Mindy Show ain’t got time for your backhanded compliments. In a 2014 interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Minday made it clear strong is better than skinny. “[People are like] It’s so refreshing that Mindy feels so comfortable to like, let herself go and be a fat sea monster. And I’m like, ‘I run and work out.’ It takes a lot of effort to look like a normal/chubby woman.”
Rihanna has had a crazy and amazing summer. From her role in Valerian, to DJ Khaled’s “Wild Thoughts” and of course, the more recent launch of Fenty Beauty. And yet, there are still people out there who rather focus on how she looks like in a dress than all her amazing achievements.
But just to prove she knows — and doesn’t care — Rihanna commented on a fan account’s Instagram video (taken from 2015 of her carrying snacks in a convenience store) “Somebody called me too fat?” with three laugh-crying emojis.
Perhaps the snarkiest but best of all retorts, Gabourey Sidibe had the best response to being body-shamed after the 2014 Golden Globes.
:”To the people making mean comments about my GG pics, I mos def cried about it on that private jet on the way to my dream job last night. #JK.”
Always refreshingly honest, Jennifer Lawrence had a great answer to being told to lose weight early in her career. “If anybody even tries to whisper the word ‘diet’, I’m like, ‘You can go f*ck yourself.'”
The creator of America’s Next Top Model took a lot of slack for gaining weight when she quit modelling and launched her TV career.
“To all of you that have something nasty to say about me, or other women that are built like me, women that sometimes or all the time look like this, women whose names you know, women whose names you don’t, women who have been picked on, women whose husbands put them down, women at work or girls in school — I have one thing to say to you: Kiss my fat ass!”
This fiesty actress has something to say when it comes to comparing herself to others. “I’ll work out and eat healthy, but i’m not desperate to shed the weight. Body image is what you make of it. I refuse to compare myself to anyone anymore. I’ve done it, it didn’t make me feel good. I don’t like comparison hangovers.”
Not one to show off just how much she loves to show off her body, Kim Kardashian got more serious in 2016 with a post on her website. “I am empowered by my body. I am empowered by my sexuality. I am empowered by feeling comfortable in my skin. I am empowered by showing the world my flaws and not being afraid of what anyone is going to say about me… The body-shaming and slut-shaming — it’s like, enough is enough.”
