5 Golden Globe-Nominated Movies You Need To Catch In Cinemas
1. La La Land

Who knew Ryan Gosling could play jazz piano like a pro? The Notebook heartthrob and his co-star Emma Stone are a triple-threat (some might even say quadruple-threat) in this mesmerising musical directed byWhiplash creator Damien Chazelle as they sing, dance, act and romance their way into audience’s hearts. It’s a compelling, timeless tale of love, life and the pains of pursing one’s dreams. Jaded jazz player (Gosling) meets a young aspiring actress (Stone) and their love story set within the beautiful LA scenery is interspered with fantastic song and dance numbers that will linger long after you’ve left the cinema.

Oh yes, it’s also nominated for seven golden globes including Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Performance by an Actress and Best Director.

2. Nocturnal Animals

There are only a handful of showings left, but if you haven’t caught this Tom Ford psychological-thriller yet, don’t miss out! It garnered three nominations for the Globes – Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Motion Picture) – and tells a gripping tale about power and revenge when an art gallery owner (Amy Adams) feels threatened by her ex-husband’s thriller novel, in which art concides with reality. It’s a highly stylized film and visually striking that’s worth a watch, especially if you love neo-noir type movies.

3. Arrival

This critically-acclaimed sci-fi mystery film features Amy Adams again, who clinched a nom for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama). She plays a language expert and leader of a top-notch team who go to investigate a host of mysterious spaceships who’ve appeared on earth and find out if they come in peace or otherwise. If you loved Interstellar, War of the Worlds and The Martian, this film is right up your alley so be sure to give it a viewing when it lands in cinemas on 12 Jan next week.

4. Jackie

Natalie Portman put on a wig and instantly transformed into one of America’s most iconic First Ladies, Jacqueline Kennedy, in this affecting biographical drama. The movie follows Jacqueline Kennedy’s life immediately following the assassination of her husband, President John F Kennedy, detailing her tragic heartbreak and grief but also her inner strength to overcome it all. It’s no surprise that Natalie won a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama)! The movie opens here on 16 February.

5. Hacksaw Ridge

Based on the incredible true story of Desmond T. Doss played by Andrew Garfield, a conscientious objector and army medic who ends up saving the lives of 75 wounded men in the frontlines of Okinawa during WWII’s bloodiest battle, all without being equipped with a gun or weapon. The film itself, directed by Mel Gibson, is poised to win four Golden Globes including Best Motion Picture (Drama), and Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama), and you’ll want to bring some tissues into the cinemas when Hacksaw Ridge opens here on 19 January.
