The news we’ve all been waiting for: The special episode of South Korean zombie thriller ‘Kingdom’ will be aired next month.
While short, the newly released teaser by Netflix shows the mysterious Ashin (played by Gianna Jun or Jun Ji-hyun) clutching a purple bloom, the resurrection plant, while the screen flashes “To revive the dead, a price must be paid”.
Most importantly, it has also unveiled that the special episode will be aired on July 23, 2021.
The special episode will reveal the origin of the plague and how the resurrection plant that grows in the northern region plunged Joseon into darkness.
In a press conference earlier this year, the show’s writer, Kim Eun-hee shared, “Ashin is one of the main characters of the Kingdom series. I was trying to tell a story of Ashin when I realised I had to touch on the important mystery of the resurrection plant. But I thought it would be more apt to capture that in a spin-off rather than writing that in the regular seasons to make it more interesting.”
Season two ended with lead characters Crown Prince Lee Chang (Ju Ji-hoon) and physician Seo Bi (Bae Doona) on the trail of the origin of the resurrection plant. This leads them to encounter more zombies in a far-flung Korean village near the Chinese border, as well as Ashin, who appears to be spreading the virus on purpose and even keeping the zombies caged up.
