Dogs pant when they get overheated, and panting dogs are much harder to film well than dogs that have their mouth closed. Make sure your dog is well-rested and cool before filming” explains Steffi Trott – professional dog trainer at SpiritDog Training.
Steffi goes on to reveal some hacks for capturing those adorable puppy expressions on film:
“You can get that adorable head tilt by making silly noises. Those could be kissy-noises, high-pitched talk, or saying the names of places or activities your dog enjoys, such as “Who wants to play ball?” Then you can get a great shot as your dog is tilting his head!”
Nicole Ellis, a certified pro dog trainer with Rover.com shares that holding treats above the camera can fix your dog’s attention in the right direction.
“The best pet treats are smelly – because they capture your pet’s attention. But choose treats that do not make a mess. Crumbs are distracting for your viewers – and your dog will be too busy snuffling about cleaning up crumbs while you are waiting to film.”
Of course you don’t want to use too many treats and cause an upset belly so using food from your dog’s daily allowance is a great idea.

Pomeranian dogs are the biggest earners on TikTok according to the latest research – so does that mean they are easier to train for the camera?
“All dogs can be trained, but some may take more work than others,” says Nicole. “The Pomeranian dogs often make viral videos not because they are easier to train, but because they are cute. Who can resist a cute pom face!
“But with practice and patience, any dog can be trained – it does not matter how old they are.”
Meg Marrs Founder & Dog Trainer at K9 of Mine reveals a top tip for making your dog look majestic on film.
“Get on the ground! Getting on your dog’s level results in some awesome and unusual shots, rather than just shooting down from above, because that’s the view everyone sees.”
If you want to harness the earning power of your pooch, then Steffi offers up some great ideas for using the edit and sound functions within the TikTok app – or Instagram, if that’s the app you prefer.
“If you want to shoot one of those adorable videos where the dog barks in response to questions – but your dog doesn’t bark on command – you can lightly knock on a table or door.
“Most dogs respond to knocking with barking. If you do it lightly enough it won’t be audible in the final video – or you can edit it out – but your dog will bark for sure.”
Says Meg, “A lot of ‘normal’ things your dog does such as shaking off after a bath or running full speed look really good in slow motion. Film your dog during one of those times, put some music to it and you have the perfect social media video.”
