Tourists flock to Japan’s capital city to gorge on sushi, ramen, yakitori and other hallmarks of the country’s renowned cuisine. But, as spotlighted on an episode of Netflix’s Ugly Delicious, Tokyo is also home to some of the best pizzas east of Italy. 

Specialising in classic and creative Neapolitan-style pies – which are beloved for their thin, light and airy crust, signature charred edges, and simple ingredients – here are some of the city’s notable pizza purveyors to dine at on your next trip.

Another of Tokyo’s well-regarded pizzerias is Pizza Studio Tamaki, which has outposts in Higashiazabu and Roppongi. Their Neapolitan-style pies sport a chewy, airy dough and a perfectly mottled crust from the high heat of the wood-fired oven. Besides their namesake pizza (cherry tomatoes, smoked mozzarella, pecorino and basil), they also make versions with ingredients such as buffalo mozzarella, sausage and ‘nduja.
