Since this afternoon activity can be a pricey affair, we have compiled a list of top places for affordable high tea in Singapore spots (all under $40++!) where you can sinfully indulge without busting your budget:

1. The Coastal Settlement, $19++ per person

With its far-flung (aka ulu) location, The Coastal Settlement with its surrounding greenery and vintage-style interiors is perfect for an afternoon to escape it all — and an affordable high tea set to tuck into while you're there.

Available from 3.30pm to 5.30pm daily, the tiered stand comes with a medley of seasonal morsels inspired by Asian and classic flavours, as well as classic treats including assorted cakes and pastries. Plus, you'll get a free flow of coffee or tea on weekdays.

Still feeling peckish? There are other items on the high tea menu like a trio of buns stuffed with chilli crab, sambal prawns and truffle cream mushrooms ($18++), wagyu beef toast ($23++) and chicken crackers ($16++).

A high tea set at a Japanese ox-tongue specialty restaurant? Yes, you heard that right. Nestled in Takashimaya, Gyutan-Tan specialises in ox-tongue and binchotan-grilled dishes. Besides its mains of rice bowls and grilled meats, it also offers dainty afternoon tea sets of Japanese treats for one or two persons. The set consists of warabimochi, sakura mochi, tiramisu, egg and ham sandos, and of course, its specialty grilled meats in the form of mini gyutan sliders, and more.  Dine in its Japandi-inspired restaurant and take Insta-worthy snaps of its Gyutan-Tan tree!

Durian lovers rejoice! The Afternoon Tea set from Ms Durian is not only available during tea time but throughout the day from 11am to 9pm. Indulge in the MSW Durian Money Bag in a crisp spring roll skin, and three other Mao Shan Wang (MSW) delights like the MSW Durian Craquelins which are mini-sized chocolate choux puffs, MSW durian macaron with buttercream and MSW durian cheese mousse with brown butter crumble. You can also add on with beverages, from durian coffee to lemongrass pandan tea.

4. Christina's at Mondrian Singapore Duxton ($25++ per person)

With its glass windows and sumptuous interiors, Christina’s, the all-day dining cafe and cocktail space at Mondrian Singapore Duxton offers a fancy spot for affordable high tea that won't make too much of a dent in your wallet.

The restaurant offers a blend of Mediterranean nuances and Asian flavours, also seen in its afternoon tea menu priced at $50++ (good for two, so that's $25++ per person!). Served on a classic three-tiered stand, dive into bites like lobster vol au vent, mushroom quiche and satay with peanut soft bun. Sweets run from ondeh macarons to lemon meringue tarts and tiramisu balls.

With the Singapore High Tea Set ($59++ for two persons) treat yourself to a myriad of flavours, from buttery scones to Coronation Chicken on Wanton Skin and Buah Keluak Crostini. If you're in the City Hall area on the weekends, swing by Tux Bar & Lounge at Carlton Hotel. The bar has recently unveiled its new alfresco area, where you can nibble on handcrafted bites from its afternoon tea set and watch the world go by.

Sweets veer from the Pina Colada Verrine to the Mini Matcha Financier with Yoghurt Cream, Chocolate Raspberry Verrine, and the Tuxedo Signature Cake. For savouries, there's a mushroom quiche, egg mayo croissant and tuna sandwich. Plus, scones, of course.

True to its name, high tea at Arteastiq is certainly an artistic affair. Housed in a photogenic two-tiered gold cage, its Dream Teasery Afternoon Tea set — which will cost you $68++ for two or $38++ for one — comes with an assortment of intriguing sweet and savoury treats, like Truffle Croque Monsieur, Smoked Snow Fish Jelly, and Baby Squid with squid ink foam.

Or if you prefer local delights, there’s the similarly priced National Treasure Afternoon Tea set that’ll whet your appetite with the likes of Nasi Lemak with crispy puff rice, Spicy Otah Sando, and Singapore Laksa Boston Lobster Meat.

The dainty and exquisite eclairs from L’eclair Patisserie need no introduction. But if you’re looking for an extra Instagram-able experience, try its adorable Merry-Go-Delice Afternoon Tea set that comes in a miniature merry-go-round that spins daintily.

The set comprises the patisserie’s best-selling pastries including five mini eclairs, two pairs of scones and five pairs of savoury canapes of your choice including mini quiches and Ikura Vol-Au-Vent which is a decadent combination of cream cheese and ikura.
