Coffee-soaked sponge fingers, creamy mascarpone, a splash of alcohol and a plentiful dusting of cocoa powder – what’s not to love about tiramisu? Despite its global popularity, the dessert doesn’t have all that long of a history. It’s suggested to have been invented in Italy around the 1960s (though its exact origins have long been heavily contested), with some even claiming that it has aphrodisiac properties.

Whether you prefer yours with a stronger or milder coffee flavour, on the sweet side or sans the booze, there are many restaurants, bakeries and home-based outfits in Singapore serving standout renditions of the dessert. Here are a few worth trying.

This Italian purveyor has a sprawling tiramisu menu with many unique flavours. While you can’t go wrong with the Original – which has coffee- and bourbon-soaked sponge fingers and velvety mascarpone – we’re also fans of the Pistachio that’s made with Grand Marnier, Italian pistachio paste and roasted pistachios. Their other alcohol-infused options are the Almond-Amaretto, Limoncello and seasonal Sicilian Blood Orange, while non-alcoholic flavours include the Matcha, Black Sesame and classic Chocolate (you can get a non-alcoholic version of the Original, too).

Although better known for its top-ranked specialty coffee and brunch fare, PUNCH – a CBD mainstay with a beautiful courtyard sporting bench seating and lush green walls – also doles out a solid tiramisu. Of course, they only use the best coffee – made from Genovese Super Brazil arabica espresso beans to be specific – for the tiramisu, which is also spiked with an ample portion of Marsala wine. It’s the perfect bittersweet and boozy dessert, though you may want to keep the kids’ hands off this one.

Da Paolo Gastronomia boasts several outlets in Singapore – including at Great World, Holland Village and VivoCity – making it one of the more convenient places to satiate your tiramisu cravings. The gourmet retail store and café specialises in all things Italian, and their desserts are no exception. Here, the tiramisu is made with Italian savoiardi biscuits soaked in coffee and Marsala wine and layered with a generous amount of mascarpone. You can get it in original and pistachio flavours, and there’s also a Nutella one that uses brandy instead of Marsala wine.

If you want to purchase your tiramisu from a home-based business, consider The Crumb Room. This small-scale operation makes the dessert in two flavours. There’s the signature Espresso Bliss – soft and fluffy sponge fingers doused in potent espresso and sandwiched between globs of mascarpone – alongside the Grey Matter, a twist on the traditional take that replaces coffee with Earl Grey tea, adds a splash of Baileys and is crowned with a dusting of aromatic tea leaves.
