From tempura and sashimi to yakitori and mochi, it’s no secret that Singaporeans love Japanese food. The next time you’re hankering for a quick bite and want to sink your teeth into a dish that hails from the Land of the Rising Sun, how about some onigiri or onigirazu?
Most people would be familiar with onigiri – triangle-shaped, rice-based snacks that are normally stuffed with a single filling (cooked salmon, fried chicken, umeboshi, ikura, etc.) and wrapped in crispy seaweed. The past couple of years have also seen the introduction of onigirazu to Singapore, where ingredients are moulded into a flat, sandwich-like shape. Whatever your preference, here’s where you can try the healthy and satisfying treat.
Singapore’s newest onigirazu purveyor is the latest addition to Upper Thomson Road, which is known for its solid selection of dining options. Helmed by a young couple, the takeaway concept uses an automated onigirazu maker to craft its items, which come in a variety of interesting flavours. You can try the Hawaiian-style spam and egg, go local with the otak and mentaiko sauce, sample the deep-fried chicken with melted cheese or tuck into the teriyaki fried tofu.

This home-based business claims to be the first establishment serving onigirazu in Singapore, and does island-wide delivery. And given the hefty portions, it’s perfect for those with a big appetite. We like the Tamago Chashu (pork chashu and a hanjuku egg, with the option of adding truffle oil) and the Oni-Gyu-Razu (seared striploin, fried egg and caramelised onions). Vegetarians can go for the Tamago 2.0, which sports a winning double-egg combination of a marinated soft-boiled egg and tamagoyaki.
Located smack-dab in the middle of the CBD, this is a popular place for office workers in the area to get their lunchtime onigiri fix. Their signature item features a thick slab of fried spam and egg, while other renditions include pork, sesame chicken, fried squid, miso aburi salmon and prawn salad. Vegetarians, fret not: they also make suitable options using plant-based Quorn. You can pair your onigiri with yummy sides including truffle fries and chicken karaage.

At the popular supermarket’s Orchard Central location, you’ll find Tomita Seimai. This onigiri stand – which launched in late 2021 – whips up premium onigiri from scratch using high-quality, freshly milled Japanese rice, setting it apart from the onigiri that’s available at other Don Don Donki stores. They have a wide selection of flavours that you won’t easily find elsewhere, including salmon belly, unagi, sesame kombu, ikura with soy sauce and umeboshi with honey.

While Samurice used to have multiple stands throughout the city-state, it’s since whittled down its outlets to a single storefront at Guoco Tower. You’ll have a field day with the different options available. There are classics including umeboshi, mentaiko, teriyaki salmon, kombu and ikura, alongside more novel flavours such as spicy seasoned vegetables and salmon wasabi mayo. Grab a few for a quick and hearty lunch.

Onigirazu Don doles out homemade, hearty onigirazu stuffed with meat-centric fillings: think grilled chicken breast marinated in a miso and garlic sauce; pan-seared smoked duck; and juicy teriyaki chicken thigh. All variations come with tamago, cheddar cheese, lettuce and cucumber, as well as a side salad with sesame dressing. Orders can be placed online or via WhatsApp, and you can opt for delivery or collect your goodies from their Bukit Batok location.

So you’ve tried standard onigiri that’s made with steamed Japanese rice and wrapped in a sheet of crispy seaweed. But what about grilled onigiri? If you’re intrigued, you can track it down at Matsukiya in Paragon, which specialises in assorted grilled Japanese items. The rice is compressed into a triangular shape, glazed with a moreish house-made marinade and cooked to perfection over a traditional binchotan grill. It’s nice and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and is served with a dollop of refreshing pickles.

This restaurant may be better known for its ramen dishes – which are certainly delicious – but we also like ordering a couple of their onigirazu as a starter, which is made using top-notch Koshihikari rice harvested from Japan’s Niigata prefecture. The ikura version comes with a generous amount of rice, seasoned salmon roe and a thin sliver of cucumber to cut through the oiliness and fattiness of the ikura. Other flavours include cooked salmon, seared chashu and salted cod roe.
