Always on the hunt for new dining spots? We bring you sound bites on where to eat, including new restaurant and eatery openings, the best places for your after-work tipple, and what’s new in the food scene.
The latest in dining news: Andaz Singapore has opened a new Cantonese restaurant, creperie French Fold has a second outlet at Palais Renaissance, Gong Cha has teamed up with Famous Amos for a delectable new drink, and more.
What was previously Auntie’s Wok & Steam Menu at Andaz Singapore is now modern Cantonese restaurant, 5 on 25 . Designed by famed Hong Kong-based architect Andre Fu, the cinematic interiors recall the nostalgic glamour of the fifties, with rich colours and textures, as well as full-height glass windows that afford views of the cityscape.
Head chef Lim Hong Lih, formerly assistant Head Chef of Summer Pavilion, sends out classic Cantonese dishes with a modern slant (and an emphasis on sustainability) from the kitchen. For starters, the juicy and meaty Boston Lobster Claw ($28++ for two pieces) cloaked in a light crisp batter, and homemade sweet chilli sauce cleverly housed in a pastry case is fab.
The Chef’s Barbecue Combination Platter ($36++) is a must-order; the fatty char siew is beautifully charred and glistening, while the roast pork boasts a crackling skin and comes with a swipe of mustard that cuts through the richness. While often found braised, the bird’s nest ($98++) here is stir-fried with Sri Lankan crab and bean sprouts, emanating a fragrant wok hei flavour. It comes with a double-boiled chicken stock cooked with ham and pork that hits the spot. We also had the Boston lobster poached rice “Pao fan” ($25++), with a light lobster broth and succulent chunks of the crustacean.
Got room for dessert? Don’t miss out on the Chocolate Mandarin Egg Tart ($16++) with a zesty custard and decadent chocolate underneath, accompanied by a bright lime sherbet studded with actual lychee bits.
Come here for lunch, and you’ll also find a dim sum menu with delights like xiao long bao, scallop siew mai, deep-fried roasted duck puff, and pan-seared carrot cake.
5 on 25 is at Andaz Singapore, 5 Fraser St, Singapore 189354.
Merci Marcel’s specialty crepes store French Fold will soon open the doors to its second outlet at Palais Renaissance, joining the current Merci Marcel flagship outlet located on the same premise. It’s set to open on Jan 19, 2022, with an alfresco area as well as an indoor dining space and a bar parked at the entrance.
The refreshed menu will see the same well-loved French galettes and crepes but with a local twist. There’s the yellow curry-based No.11 ($22++) enveloping sauteed shrimps and a leek fondue, as well as the No.14 ($18++) with tandoori coconut milk sauce, pineapple, and succulent chunks of chicken.
But classic favourites can be found on the menu too, like the traditional No.01 ($8++) served with Maison Beillevaire butter in various flavours, as well as No.04 ($17++), which encases ham, sunny side up egg, sauteed mushrooms, and Comte cheese.
End your meal on a sweet note with galettes like the tarte tartin-inspired No.26 ($16++), which has caramelised Pink Lady apples and salted caramel, as well as the toothsome No.28 drizzled with lime coulis and served with dark chocolate chips and milk chocolate. Like at its first outlet, you can pair them with the artisanal botanical gelato from local brand Birds of Paradise.
French Fold’s second outlet is at 390 Orchard Road, #01-02, Palais Renaissance, Singapore 238871.
Tea and cookies take on a new meaning at Gong Cha — visit any of its outlets now and you’ll find a new drink on the menu. A tie-up with cookie brand Famous Amos, the bubble tea chain has unveiled an indulgent edition of its Earl Grey – Hazelnut Milk Tea.
The limited-edition drink comes topped with generous helpings of Famous Amos cookies atop whipped cream. So you’ll get crunchy cookie bits while you slurp up the creamy treat, which is made with Valrhona hazelnut praline. Yum.
It’s priced at $7.80 per cup, and you can top it up with a box of Famous Amos cookie in a CNY-themed box for $9 (U.P $12.90, 150g).
Teaming up with lifestyle and hospitality group 1855 F&B, chef Marvas Ng, who has extensive experience in French fine dining as well as fine modern European fare in China, Hong Kong and Singapore, is set to open mod-Asian space Path Restaurant.
Favouring East Asian ingredients, sauces, and condiments, he melds it with French culinary finesse to serve up contemporary Asian fare that can be enjoyed both a la carte and as curated set menus.
Think plates like Signature Butter Roasted Soy Glazed French Poulet, served with Hong Kong Scallion Salsa and Fresh Salad, which utilises a Cantonese technique that translates to “crispy skin water” for crackling skin, and an Imperial Stock Braised “Kuhlbarra” Fish Maw.
The restaurant has no fixed opening date (it was slated for mid-January) but you can check out its Instagram page for updates.
Path Restaurant is at #01-05/06, Marina Bay Financial Centre, Tower 3, 12 Marina Boulevard, Singapore 018982.
