Ahead of the nation’s 57th birthday on Aug 9, restaurants, bakeries and F&B brands have been quick to dream up the likes of locally-inspired eats and National Day-exclusives.
Celebrate the occasion with these delicious treats that nod to the flavours familiar to and synonymous with our little red dot.
Da Paolo’s well-loved Gula Melaka Coconut Bun ($5.50 each) makes a return this National Day, and with a new recipe.
Handcrafted with sweet enriched pandan-infused sourdough, the dense and soft laminated layers are spread with gula melaka and desiccated coconut for extra texture. The bun is then drizzled with more gula melaka syrup and a pandan reduction that’s best served warm.
Available for pre-order from Aug 1 to 31, 2022 on Da Paolo’s online grocery shop (*Fri to Sun only and on Aug 9, Tues, subject to availability), and available for purchase in-store at selected Gastronomia outlets from Aug 5 to 31, 2022.
Coconut, pandan and gula melaka are three ingredients that are synonymous with Singapore cuisine. Drawing on that, Hokkaido-based concept cafe Baristart Coffee has rolled out a limited-edition Coconut Pandan Gula Melaka Cream Puff ($7++) that oozes a rich custard perfumed with the aromatic notes of the three familiar flavours. Made from the same Hokkaido BIEI Jersey Milk that has made Baristart’s cream puffs a hit, the choux puff is then finished with a sprinkling of crisps and sugary bits.

Pizza Express’ crowd-pleasing Laksa Pizza is back — think a medley of prawns, mussels, squid, clams, quail’s eggs and fried beancurd on a bed of tasty homemade laksa sauce.
To make it a merrier affair, there’s also a National Day bundle ($57++, U.P. $83++) that’ll get you a Laksa Pizza, an additional pizza of your choice (from five options), eight dough balls, garlic bread mozza, and four soft drinks. Pizzas come in 13″ Grande Classic on delivery and takeaway or 14″ Romana for dine-in.

Practically a national institution itself, Breadtalk is celebrating National Day with a Flavours of Home collection that nods to hawker fare through delicious buns and pastries.
Sink your teeth into Chicky Satay, which sees a trio of bite-sized croissants housing chicken satay chunks and sauce, or the Sambal Swirl, with spicy shrimp sambal paste nestled within a flaky pastry. For something sweet, try the Kaya Kebaya, a croissant wiht Hainanese kaya custard and desiccated coconut. All are at $2.20 each or $4 for two.
Cakes get a local twist too, from the Pandan Light Cheesecake ($11.20 per cake) to the Pandan Gula Melaka Crunch ($25.80 per cake), a soft pandan chiffon that has gula melaka mousse, toasted coconut flakes and gula melaka. Love Nanyang coffee? Get the Kopimisu ($9.80 per box), a chocolate chiffon infused with kopi and layered with creamy mascarpone mousse.
The Flavours of Home collection will be available at all BreadTalk outlets island-wide from Aug 1 to 31, and online on GrabFood, FoodPanda, Deliveroo, as well as its E-Store.
McDonald’s has rolled out an all-new Laksa Delight Burger, and you can choose from a crispy fried prawn or chicken patty slathered with creamy laksa sauce, an egg and purple cabbage slaw.
Wash it down with the Teh C Frappé (from $4.50 for S and $5 for M), McDonald’s indulgent spin on the local beverage with a topping of chocolate powder as well as whipped cream. And if you have more room in the tummy, get the Pulut Hitam Pie (from $1.70) that oozes with a purple sticky rice and coconut cream filling.
Make it a meal with the Laksa Delight Feast – a combination of the Laksa Delight Burger – Prawn or Chicken – with French Fries (M), Pulut Hitam Pie and Coke Original Taste Less Sugar (S). The Laksa Delight Feast is available from $10.80.
The Laksa Delight Burger – Prawn or Chicken, Teh C Frappe and Pulut Hitam Pie are available from July 28, 2022 for takeaway or dine-in at all restaurants, Drive-Thrus and via McDelivery, GrabFood and Foodpanda for a limited period only, while stocks last.
Burger King’s ever-popular rendang burgers are on the menu again. This year, the line-up includes both familiar favourites — Double Rendang Beef Burger and Rendang Tendergrill Chicken Burger — as well as new creations.
What’s new? The Rendang Whopper ($7.45 a la carte), a hefty stack that has a flame-grilled Whopper beef patty assembled with a drizzle of mayo, crisp lettuce, fresh onions and a generous dollop of rendang sauce.
The sides get rendang-fied too. With the Rendang Drumlets Shake ($4.90 a la carte), you get to literally shake up Burger King’s Mexican Drumlets to get them coated in the luscious sauce. There’s also the option of shaking it up with fries and nuggets with the Rendang Shake ($4.90 a la carte).
From Paradise Dynasty, you’ll be feasting on Laksa Xiao Long Bao ($9.80 for five pieces), aptly coloured in red and white. Enveloped within the thin dumpling skin is a tangy and spicy laksa broth (no coconut milk here) and soft minced pork filling.
The restaurant has also whipped up a Wok-fried Rice Cake with Crab Meat in Chilli Crab Sauce ($15.80++) that pairs chewy rice cakes with crab meat chunks and a subtly spicy sauce.

Over at sister restaurant Canton Paradise, the ubiquitous chilli crab has been reimagine as a bite-sized delight with the Crispy Chilli Crab Pastry ($7.80++ for three). The thin almost-flaky pastry shell houses a slightly spicy and sweet sauce with chunks of crab meat.

Swensen’s is paying homage to the chilli crab with an entire menu of options dedicated to the iconic dish.
Fill your belly with the likes of a Chilli Soft Shell Crab Burger ($17.90++), a Chilli Crab Pasta ($14.90++), or Chilli Crab Baked Rice ($15.90++). For sharing (or to devour on your own), there’s the Chilli Crab Pizza ($17.90++) topped with luscious sauce and mozzarella cheese.
And if you have an adventurous palate, there’s even a chilli crab ice cream. Yes you read that right. Unfortunately, this isn’t for sale, and is only available as part of Swensens’ brand tie-ups and giveaways. Only 25 pints are available so look out for it on the brand’s social media platforms.
Otherwise, hop on Deliveroo’s Instagram and Facebook channels because Swensen’s has teamed up with the delivery platform for a social media giveaway to roll out an additional 20 pints. More details will be available in Aug.

Featuring local flavours alongside perennial favourites, you can look forward to bite-sized savouries like Otah Mousse Toast, Crab Coleslaw Ciabatta, and a juicy Satay Chicken Brioche. For sweets, there’s the Sweet Yam Tart, Pandan Gula Melaka Tea Cake, as well as the decadent and creamy Milo Lover’s Dream Petite Cupcake with Milo frosting and crunchy cookie crumble.
The Pandan Gula Melaka Cake ($11++ per slice, $88+ for 1.5kg) and Milo Lover’s Dream Cupcake ($6++) are also available as a la carte options.
