3 Meaningful Ways You Can Express Gratitude Towards Your Loved Ones

Turn your thankfulness into tangible gifts of gratitude for those around you

October 14, 2020

Did you know that our gratitude towards others affects how we see our own lives? Being thankful means counting our blessings and expressing our thanks to the people who have helped us in one way or another.

In her book The Gifts of Imperfection, vulnerability researcher Brené Brown – and the woman behind one of the top five most viewed TED talks in the world – shares her tips for living a wholehearted life, compiled from 12 years of research on the subject.

One of the findings that emerged from her research was that the people who described themselves as joyful all had one thing in common: an active gratitude practice. Practising gratitude brings us peace and joy. We have all heard of gratitude journals, but here are some unique ways to show our appreciation to the people around us in tangible ways that they can understand:

3 Meaningful Ways You Can Express Gratitude Towards Your Loved Ones
Express your feelings in words by writing (not typing!) a letter

In the era of smartphones, email and social media, the art of letter-writing has been fading over the years. But nothing says “I really mean it” with a handwritten card or note. Grab a pen and paper and write a letter by hand to someone whom you have never properly thanked.

Throughout life, you will have met many people, and every one of them has likely had an impact on you – perhaps a favourite teacher, or a kind old neighbour. Take the time to write a true, heartfelt letter to one of these people; you could even hand-deliver it. Let them know how your life has been changed because of their presence in it and express true thankfulness.

Make a concerted effort to thank those who have served you in one way or another

The service industry makes the world go round, but those in it rarely receive true thanks. The next time you interact with that auntie who prepares your meal at the hawker centre or that uncle who wiped down your table, take a moment to ask their name and then sincerely thank them for their service to you.

If you are at a retail store, thank the salesperson for helping you to find the product you were looking for. If you are at the coffee shop, thank the barista for the coffee or tea they brewed for you.

Your life would be very different without them (and your daily coffee!) in it, and they deserve to hear your genuine thanks.

Make use of social media to spread the news and share a glowing review

You have the power of public relations in the palm of your hand — literally. Share a positive post on social media about a friend who may have accomplished something incredible or leave a review for a company or product that you truly love.

Perhaps you experienced outstanding service and someone went above and beyond for you, be it at a restaurant or a retail outlet. Small businesses will really appreciate the time and effort made to put in the good word.
