With the 76th Golden Globe Awards just around the corner, we can’t help but feel excited for what’s to come this year. Here are 11 upcoming movies with strong female leads that you can’t miss this year:

Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) plays a young Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who is currently the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. The movie sees aspiring lawyer Ruth struggling for equal rights in a man’s world, both at Harvard Law School and when she begins her legal career. It also stars Armie Hammer, Kathy Bates and Justin Theroux.
Also based on an iconic figure (albeit one who isn’t around anymore), this biographical drama sees Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) step into the shoes of the fearless and celebrated American journalist, Marie Colvin. Marie was a war correspondent for British paper The Sunday Times, and frequently charged into the frontlines to illuminate the cost of war through the pain of those suffering in it. Bring tissues.
Initially released in the US last year, this biographical drama starring British actress Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean, Pride & Prejudice) is only reaching our shores in February 2019. Set in the early 1900s, the film is about writer Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette (Keira), who gets married to a much older, much more domineering Parisian writer who forces her to publish her novels under his name. Unwilling to be subjugated any longer, she goes to extraordinary means to reclaim her voice.
Hollywood queens Saoirse Ronan (Ladybird) and Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad) play actual 16th-century queens in this costume drama. The film sees the two female regents at loggerheads, as the young Queen Mary (Saoirse) returns to Scotland from France to reclaim her rightful throne, upon which Queen Elizabeth I (Margot) sits. Rebellion, betrayal and conspiracies ensure. The movie also stars Gemma Chan of Crazy Rich Asians fame.
As the Marvel franchise’s first female-led superhero movie (about time!), we’re really excited to see how this one plays out. Golden Globes winner Brie Larson (Room) is Carol Danvers, a US Air Force pilot whose DNA is accidentally combined with an alien’s, giving her supernatural powers. The movie takes us back to the 90s, but Captain Marvel will reportedly appear next in Avengers: Endgame in April this year.
Horror movie buffs, buckle in. If you were a fan of the Academy Award-winning thriller Get Out, here’s its creator Jordan Peele’s second film that’s set to provoke your senses. It stars Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o (Black Panther, 12 Years A Slave) as a woman returning to her beachside childhood home with her family for the summer. But something appears off, as they encounter uncanny doppelgangers. The movie also stars Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss of The Handmaid’s Tale fame.
Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) play Dr Emma Russell and Madison Russell respectively, a mother-daughter pair in this sequel to the 2014 monster flick Godzilla. They are kidnapped by a mysterious organisation with sinister motives towards the mighty creatures which include Godzilla and his various nemeses like Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah. However, it appears that Madison has some kind of connection to Mothra. The movie also stars Sally Hawkins and Zhang Ziyi, amongst other notable actors.
In this crime comedy-drama set in the 70s, Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids, Spy), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip) and Elisabeth Moss play the wives of Irish mobsters who keep the organised crime operation alive and kicking after their husbands get sent to prison. Don’t mess!
While we’re not sure anything could be better than the original trio Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu, we’re willing to give this a chance. After all, it’s directed and co-written by Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect, The Hunger Games) and features Kristen Stewart as well as fresh faces Naomi Scott (who is also playing Princess Jasmine in the Aladdin live-action remake this year) and Ella Balinska as the new Angels. It’s set to be released in November this year.
Based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott, this upcoming period drama set in 1860s Massachusetts will bring to the big screen the lives of the March sisters played by Emma Watson (Beauty and the Beast, Harry Potter series), Saoirse Ronan, Eliza Scanlen (Sharp Objects), Florence Pugh (Outlaw King). Three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep (Mamma Mia!, Mary Poppins Returns) stars as their wealthy aunt, while Laura Dern (Jurassic Park) plays the girls’ loving mother. The movie is set to be released in December this year.
Daisy Ridley reprises her role as orphaned scavanger Rey in the third and final instalment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Filming is still underway and expected to wrap up in February, so there’s little known about the movie – the title hasn’t even been announced at this point. Still, fans of the space opera can look forward to another addition to the series!
