Still procrastinating about pulling a Marie Kondo on your clutter? Now’s the time for you to muster up the courage to start. And for a start, begin with these tips to organise your wardrobe.
We tend to hold on to clothes that used to look good on us. Items that made sense before but look odd when you wear it now. Your body may have changed through the years with weight loss, weight gain and/or child birth. And with that, you may hope to fit into certain outfits again. And sometimes that means that we end up holding on to clothes we don’t wear anymore.
“The question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life.” Wise words from Marie Kondo.
If you’re hopelessly addicted to Netflix like us, you might have come across Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. This features Marie Kondo freeing people from the physical (and some say, emotional) things they’ve accumulated over the years.
However, some may not enjoy the somewhat sentimental methods that Marie advises you to apply. And if that’s you, check out Debby Kwong of Sortorial (@sortorial on Instagram) instead. The fashion stylist and writer offers helpful tips to organise your wardrobe for your jewellery to perfumes, clothes, accessories, handbags and shoes.

Instead of crowding your ties onto a hanger, loosely roll them up and store them out of direct sunlight in a drawer to prevent the colours from fading. This lets you see, at a glance, what you have.
To avoid an overcrowded wardrobe, and to force you to think more carefully the next time you buy something, remove and discard one item from your closet first before adding something new.
On your vanity, organise your perfume bottles by height – tallest in the back row, shortest in front – so you can see them clearly. Store fragrances in a cool, dark place away from humidity.
Don’t chuck your favourite accessories in a drawer. Put them on display and you’ll use them more regularly.
Doing this instantly gives you 30 per cent more space in your wardrobe.
Sort your clothes into categories – for example, sleeveless, short-sleeved, long-sleeved – then organise each group by colour.
Now that your accessories drawer or tray is organised, keep up the good work by returning your rings/necklaces to their designated places at the end of the day.
Instead, stuff each designer bag with acid-free tissue paper to keep its shape and place it upright on a shelf in a dry, cool area.
Turn all your hangers around so the hooks point towards you (yes, the “wrong” way around). After you wear something, put the cleaned item back in the cupboard with the hook facing the “normal” way. In six months, any hanger still facing the wrong way represents an item you haven’t worn and should be donated or discarded.
Arrange each pair of shoes side by side, with one toe facing out and the other facing in. By nesting the insteps together, you can save several inches of space.
