From uncovering hidden treasures to family fun itineraries, I've dived deep into all things Johor Bahru. But there's one thing in Malaysia that always steals my heart — their electrifying night markets, or pasar malams

These open-air havens are popular with locals and Singaporeans because there is so much to eat, see and buy — all at affordable prices. You'll find everything from clothes to refreshing bubble tea, local produce, and even housewares on sale.

But here's the catch: Not all of these night markets open every night. Unlike Pasar Karat near the causeway (open all week except Mondays), some pasar malams only appear on specific days.

Monday — Century Garden Monday Night Market

Just outside the bustling KSL Mall is a road called Jalan Seladang, which transforms into a foodie street every Monday evening.

From crispy golden-fried chicken to refreshing coconut pudding, Century Garden Monday Night Market caters to every craving. Savour classic Malaysian dishes like chee cheong fun, yong tau foo or kolo mee. For those with a sweet tooth, try the mango sticky rice and pancakes or explore the delightful assortment of kuihs and buns.

Tuesday — Johor Jaya Tuesday Night Market

This bustling night market boasts an incredible variety of food, clothing, fresh produce and homeware stalls, mostly from Chinese vendors.

Although the market is a little far from the main city area (a 15 to 20 min cab ride), the food here is definitely worth the trip, and everything there is very affordable too. According to reviewers on Google, the night market’s Mua Chee (peanut mochi) is a must-try, along with traditional Hakka thunder tea rice.

If you’re shopping near Paradigm Mall on Wednesdays, consider heading to Pasar Malam Taman Dahlia for your night market fix.

Stalls offer everything from comforting fried rice and juicy kebabs to homemade pizzas. However, according to reviewers, the true stars of the show are the authentic Malay cuisine offered by the many Muslim sellers.

Don't miss the chance to indulge in a fragrant plate of nasi lemak or explore the variety of kuih available here!

Venture beyond the usual tourist hotspots and discover the hidden gem in Johor Bahru that is the Impian Emas Thursday Night Market.

From rows upon rows of cooked food and tasty snacks to stalls overflowing with fresh groceries like meat, seafood, fruits, and vegetables, you can satisfy all your cravings and stock up on daily essentials.

The market’s laksa and chicken chop are highly recommended, but do take note there aren’t any places to sit and eat your food.

Friday — Puteri Wangsa Friday Night Market

Tucked away in the northern reaches of Johor Bahru lies the Puteri Wangsa Friday Night Market.

Though smaller compared to its counterparts at KSL and Taman Johor Jaya, things sold at this pasar malam are known to be generally cheaper.

Predominantly run by Muslim vendors, this market offers a taste of authentic Malay cuisine at wallet-friendly prices. Here, you'll find steaming bowls of mee goreng (fried noodles), comforting porridge ayam (chicken porridge), the rich and flavourful Penang laksa, and the delicate chee cheong fun served with a fragrant curry sauce.

Saturday — Taman Ungku Tun Aminah Saturday Night Market

Brace yourselves for the mighty Taman Ungku Tun Aminah Saturday Night Market, the undisputed king of Johor Bahru's night markets.

Located approximately a 30-minute drive away from KSL, this market is a sensory overload, but in the best way possible. Rows upon rows of stalls overflow with an incredible variety of items — clothes, household essentials, fresh produce, delectable snacks, and of course, a mind-boggling array of food stalls.

According to a review on Google, it takes about 1.5 hours to fully explore this massive market.

Don't miss the must-try recommendations:

Jia Jia Soya Milk: Renowned for its thick, smooth texture – reviewers say it's the best you'll ever have!

Chee Cheong Fun: This version boasts a unique texture – slightly thicker than usual with a satisfying springy bite.

Leong Kee Fried Carrot Cake: Be prepared to queue for this local favourite, known for its generous servings of egg and melt-in-your-mouth carrot cake.

The Permas Sunday Night Market is my personal favourite – and for good reason!

This sprawling market stretches on for what feels like miles, offering everything from  children's toys, fresh local produce, bags, clothes and more. But the real star of the show is the incredible selection of street food.

Indulge in classic local dishes like char kway teow and mua chee, as well as Chinese desserts and Thai food at very affordable prices.

This pasar malam is located just 15 minutes from the JB Causeway, and has free parking. Just remember to get there early!
