Getting the kids to read books is no easy feat. But if your kids are fans of comics and graphic novels, here's some good news — the National Library Board (NLB) has opened a new pop-up Comics Library in collaboration with Anchorpoint, which will run for about a year starting today. This comes after the success of the pop-up Manga Library at City Square Mall that ran earlier this year.

Kids will love the playful atmosphere of the Comics Library, which was inspired by the pop art movement of the 1950s and 60s. Located on the first floor near Anchorpoint's main entrance, the library features dedicated sections for children including popular comics and graphic novels, Mother Tongue Language titles, and a Reference Section. There's a total of 7,500 books for a start, a collection that will gradually grow to over 11,000 titles by early 2024. And if your kids want to read on the spot, there are plenty of seating areas available, including comfortable bean bags.

Borrowing books will be quick and easy, thanks to NLB's automated Grab-n-Go service. All you have to do is scan your ID to enter the space, pick out the titles you want, then scan your ID again at the exit gantry to check out your books.

Not sure where to begin browsing? Check out the new Wallpaper Library, which displays QR codes for you to discover new comics and graphic novels. There'll also be two e-Read screens to browse popular manga and comic e-titles.

Comics and graphic novels will be available in both English and Mother Tongue languages. Photos: NLB

"The new Comics Library will give our patrons a diverse selection of comics that will make reading fun and accessible to all," said Mr Ng Cher Pong, NLB's Chief Executive Officer. "This is part of our spirit of innovation and experimentation, to work with partners to create a vibrant Learning Marketplace for everyone, as part of our ongoing LAB25 (Libraries and Archives Blueprint 2025) journey."

Visit the Comics Library on the first floor of Anchorpoint, 370 Alexandra Rd, from 22 September 2023.
