Getting To Rainforest Wild Asia

Rainforest Wild Asia is located near Bird Paradise. Driving? It’s just a 30-minute ride from the city via the Central or Pan Island Expressways. Park at Car Park 1 at Mandai Wildlife West. If you're taking public transport, hop on the Mandai Khatib Shuttle from Khatib MRT Station (NS14), which is available daily. The journey to and fro Mandai Wildlife West takes about 20 to 25 minutes and costs $2.50.

What to know and bring before going:

  • Wear comfy breathable clothes, and sports shoes with good traction. Forest treks can get wet and muddy, especially after rain.
  • It's largely unshaded, so bring hats, water, umbrellas and SPF. Handheld fans are recommended.
  • Expect mosquitos, so get the kids and yourself mozzie patches or insect repellent.

Step into a rainforest adventure the whole fam will love. The park is designed to emulate the varying levels of a rainforest, from the forest floor to the canopy, with two routes to choose from: Stroll along the elevated boardwalks that are great for prams and little legs. Or, if you’ve got adventurous youngsters, tackle the ground-level forest trails. Think pebble trails, streams, logs, and boulders to climb over.

The boardwalks are mostly unsheltered, though you’ll find some shaded spots with seats along the way, so it can get quite hot from noon. The forest floor offers a cooler, more shaded escape. Or go for both — there are gates along the trails that let you switch between routes for the best of both worlds.

As you explore, spot Southeast Asian animal species, from the majestic Malayan tigers and tapirs to various deer species, a saltwater crocodile, sun bears, lesser mousedeers and red dholes (Asiatic wild dog) in the 13-hectare open-concept wildlife park. You'll also encounter new-to-Singapore species such as the François' langur and the Philippine spotted deer, which are both endangered.

Enter The Cavern

And at the end of it all, there is The Cavern, a 220m-long marvel inspired by the Mulu caves in Sarawak, Malaysia. Explore the dark depths of its chambers, be wowed by the stalactites and stalagmites, and encounter various intriguing creatures that reside there, from scorpions to snakes (there are waist-level barriers in place, but have an eye on adventurous youngsters to keep them from climbing over). It's rather dim here, so keep the kids close to you and your noise levels down.

You'll finally arrive at the Oculus, a rock opening with a view of the sky — be sure to get a photo!
