Widely considered as an alternative form of medicine, chiropractic treatments typically centre around the spine. But according to Dr Choo Suyi of Family Chiropractic Singapore, the general misconception most people have is that chiropractic is all about “spine cracking”.

“Chiropractic techniques for pregnant mothers are very gentle. Prenatal treatment sessions will mainly focus on stabilising the pelvis region, and gentle treatment and adjustments will be administered to calm the muscles of the pelvis, allowing the hip to work in sync. This allows less inflammation and a better quality of life during pregnancy,” she says.

Dr Matt Kan, founder and senior consultant chiropractor of Chiropractic First Group, shares that aside from treating prenatal symptoms, women also opt for postnatal chiropractic care to address lower back pain due to “aggravation caused by the additional loading of the abdomen”.

“Epidural procedure has been often claimed to be the cause of the pain. Most patients will come and see their chiropractor about two weeks after their delivery for lower back pain. We will also see patients coming in for shoulder and neck pain one to two months after delivery. This is usually caused by strain from carrying the baby and adopting unnatural posture when feeding the baby,” he explains.

Considering chiropractic treatments as a way to alleviate prenatal or postpartum symptoms? Here are six clinics to check out.
