Baby wipes have truly been my best friend after having a baby. We use them for everything from cleaning his face after meals to cleaning his bum for quick diaper changes, and even for giving his toys a quick wipe-down.

Quick and convenient, it’s a great way to keep things hygienic when you’re in a pinch or out and about. There are different types of baby wipes available too, like 100% pure water wipes, bamboo wipes, moisturising wipes with lanolin, and even hand and mouth wipes.

Different wipes may be suitable for different babies and parents. Some may prefer unscented wipes that aren’t as wet, while some (like me) may prefer scented wipes that are wetter, for example.

What is the purpose of baby wipes?

Baby wipes are wet wipes made to gently clean your baby’s delicate skin, especially during diaper changes. They are also used for many things, such as cleaning sticky hands after meals, milk dribbles, dirty high chair trays, dropped toys and more.

It’s super convenient as it’s easy to bring around when you’re out, for cleaning your baby or their things, and eliminating the need to look for a tap or carry a wet handkerchief around (or needing to wash said handkerchief after using it).

Baby wipes are better for cleaning your little one compared to dry tissues too, as dry tissues can sometimes leave bits of tissue paper behind, and the rubbing can irritate your baby’s thin and sensitive skin.

What are the safest baby wipes, and what to avoid in baby wipes?

The safest baby wipes are generally the ones with the shortest ingredient list. Wipes made with a high percentage of purified water (99% to 100%) are the least likely to irritate your baby’s skin. Wipes that are hypoallergenic, dermatologically tested and pH-balanced are good things to look out for too.

Some ingredients to avoid in baby wipes, especially if your baby has sensitive or eczema-prone skin, include:

  • Alcohol - can sting and dry out delicate skin
  • Fragrances - a common trigger for skin irritation and allergic reactions
  • Parabens - preservatives that some parents may prefer to avoid
  • Phenoxyethanol - a preservative that may irritate sensitive skin
  • Chlorine bleaching - to minimise your baby’s chemical exposure
  • Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) - a preservative that may cause allergic reactions to some

If your baby develops redness or a rash after using a new wipe,  or if you just want to be safe, a pure water baby wipe will be the safest option.

What brand of baby wipes are the best?

While different parents prefer different brands according to their needs, the top preferred brands in Singapore are Pigeon, Huggies, Cloversoft and Bzu Bzu for various reasons that are covered below.

To find out which brand is best for you and your baby, we recommend buying a smaller pack to try before stocking up on your wet wipes.
