How These Cool Dads Have Influenced Their Gen Z Kids' Personal Styles
From streetwear to workwear, the personal style of these cool dads have rubbed off on their Gen Z children
Some style icons are not found on the pages of glossy magazines or runways but rather within the walls of our own homes. To mark Fathersâ Day today, we ask three stylish Gen Zers to share how pops have shaped their style and imparted some important life lessons.
ADRIANA RAHMAN, 24, MARKETING EXECUTIVE AND ABDUL RAHMAN, 47, FREIGHT OFFICER AND MUSICIAN
What are some of the style cues youâve imparted from your father?
âDefinitely comfort, a bit of streetwear and grunge.â
What are some of the favourite outfits youâve seen your dad wear?
âThereâs this one photo of him crowd-surfing during his gig, back in 2004, in his Jack Purcells, Joy Division raglan tee and Leviâs.â
What are some of the pieces your dad owns that you wished you had?
âHis vintage Leviâs Big E jeans.â
Whatâs one word youâd use to describe your father?
âAudacious.â
What is your fondest memory of your father?
âHe used to serenade me a lot when I was younger. Some of his favourite songs to sing were âYellowâ by Coldplay, and âAkustatikâ by Oag. He tried to teach me how to play the guitar at a very young age too, but I have always been more fond of the drums.â
Aside from style, what values have your father taught you?
âTo be kind, to take risks and stay grounded.â
GIBRAN SAHIR, 22, ARTIST AND SAHIR HAMID, 57, DIRECTOR OF AN INDUSTRIAL ROPE ACCESS COMPANY
What are some of the style cues youâve imparted from your father?
âHaving worked in many industrial areas throughout the years, my father tends to incorporate a lot of workwear in his outfits. He gravitates to brands from Redwing to G-Star. Growing up, I eventually picked up his sense of style.â
What are some of the favourite outfits youâve seen your dad wear?
âThe minimal denim-on-denim top and bottoms paired with mustard-yellow Redwing boots.â
What are some of the pieces your dad owns that you wished you had?
âHis Wacko Maria Guilty Parties pieces and all of his watches.â
Whatâs one word youâd use to describe your father?
âVersatile.â
What is your fondest memory of your father?
âThe fondest memory that I have of my father (abah) is probably when I went on a trip with him to Japan. I felt like I really bonded with him during the trip and it was then that I realised that our relationship was more of like a friendship and a brotherhood. I realised that in a way, I was very similar to him in terms of worldview.â
Aside from style, what values have your father taught you?
âHis perseverance and dedication when it comes to his work ethic, his compassion and humility when it comes to lending a helping hand to others, and especially the patience and wisdom that he has for his family.â
What are some of the style cues youâve imparted from your father?
âMy dad is a self-employed car parts supplier. Most of the time, he has to go to meetings and at the same time load cargo shipments over at his industrial office. Most days, I will find him dressing in straight denim jeans, a T-shirt and boots with a roughed-out glove tucked behind his pocket. This style is his very version of workwear, and to me, it is a style of a hardworking man. To this day, Iâm heavily inspired by his brand of workwear.â
What are some of the favourite outfits youâve seen your dad wear?
âMy dad loves to wear denim jeans and his suede loafers on his off days. That is my favourite as it is as casual as it is with a touch of class.â
What are some of the pieces your dad owns that you wished you had?
âHe has a pair of squarish frameless sunglasses with clip-on shades that he used while driving. The action of him clipping the shades onto his glasses will always be memorable and really cool to me.â
Whatâs one word youâd use to describe your father?
âStrong-willed.â
What is your fondest memory of your father?
âMy fondest memory of my dad was when he bought me a Nespresso machine when I relocated to a shopfront, to serve coffee to customers during appointments. In retrospect, I think that was a way for him to show belief and confidence in what I was doing.â
Aside from style, what values have your father taught you?
âMy dad is the kindest and the most hardworking man I know. Working tirelessly and giving whatever he can to people in need. He has taught me resilience, kindness and the power of endurance.â
