Here are four things to look out for when you go bra shopping:
1. The Underband: As the portion that gives the most support, the band should be taut but not tight, and sit level on your back. Lift your arms over your head and if it rides up, it means that the band size is too big (or the cup size too small), so go one size higher (or one cup bigger). Always try it on the outermost hook.
2. The Straps: You should be able to slip a finger snugly between the strap and your skin. If the straps are cutting into your shoulder, it means the cups or band size are too loose, so go down a size. If they slip down your shoulders constantly, your band size may be too small, so try a larger one.
3. The Cups: When trying on the bra, lean over and let your breasts fall naturally into the cups, smoothing out the sides to ensure that the whole breast fits neatly. If there’s spillage or bulging at the armholes or neckline, the cup is probably too small; if there’s wrinkling or puckering, it’s too large.
4. The Bridge (or Gore): The centre of your bra should be able to lie flat against your sternum or breastbone. If there’s a sizeable gap, it means your cup is too small and the band too big to support properly, so adjust accordingly.
