This Resort-Like 2-Storey Siglap Home Features A Unique Roof With Skylights
The property looks airy and resort-like thanks to the roof that lets in plenty of light, as well as lush greenery
At first glance, the gable roof of this spacious 7,750 sq ft two-storey house in Siglap may seem simple. However, the unique roof design is the key architectural feature that allows natural light to filter into the courtyard and living spaces, creating a bright and airy ambience throughout.
Roof functioning as skylights
The roof's distinctive shape and pattern, while functioning like skylights, was intentionally designed to draw attention to the central courtyard as the focal point of the home. All of the main living areas look inward towards this sun-drenched outdoor space, artfully blurring the lines between interior and exterior.
For Han Loke Kwang, principal architect of Hyla Architects, playing with the unique roof – or rather the absence of it – draws attention to the courtyard space as the focus of the abode, with main areas of the property looking into it. “We created this space within the form and volumn of the house, blurring the distinction between interior and exterior spaces, making the house feel more open,” says Han.
A deft use of textured bricks modulated with openings coupled with a striking pre-cast concrete screen helps to shield views of the house while providing visual interest.
Exterior an extension of unique roof
Despite the home's open and airy feel, clever architectural elements were employed to ensure privacy for the retired businessman homeowner and his family. A striking pre-cast concrete screen helps shield views while providing visual interest with its patterns and textures.
A lush, landscaped garden provides a welcome contrast to the austere dark grey bricks and concrete screen of the home.
Dark exterior with lush greenery
The exterior walls feature dark grey bricks modulated with openings, offering another layer of seclusion from the outside world. The lush, landscaped gardens surrounding the property create a verdant sanctuary that provides a calming natural contrast.
The staircase is a cantilevered structure with a triangular section facing a tiered landscape wall.
Cantilevered staircase
Inside, the cantilevered triangular staircase faces a striking tiered landscape wall, with the skylight roof overhead bathing the space in warm natural light. The open floor plan seamlessly connects the living areas to the central courtyard oasis.
The bathroom includes fixtures from Duravit, Hansgrohe, and Jee-O.
Luxury bathroon fixtures
The master bathroom features luxurious fixtures from top brands like Duravit, Hansgrohe, and Jee-O, with large windows allowing the space to feel bright and refreshing.
From the unique roof with integrated skylights to the beautiful courtyard living, this Siglap home is an inspiring example of how innovative architecture can enhance daily living with brilliant natural light.
