Ong Shunmugam may be synonymous with contemporary womenswear layered with an Asian aesthetic and traditional techniques, but it's recently also delved into the world of homeware.
It first started with the Suvarnabumi tableware collection, which takes its cue from Chinese, Japanese, Malay, Middle Eastern and Peranakan tableware. Then during lockdown in London, designer and founder Priscilla Shunmugam down to designing a whole new furniture range.
The new Suvarnabumi range reimagines conventional rattan furniture with an unexpected and exquisite take, and uses rattan harvested in Malaysia (which Priscilla says are of a higher grade). It's accompanied by mixed mediums like batik and synthetic rattan from Indonesia, jacquard from China, and indigenous Iban weave patterns.
Priscilla shares, "We tried our best to take a different path by ignoring the common references of rattan furniture and upping the design value and differentiation quotient in a way that feels instinctual to us."
"We also introduced the use of foreign elements like fabrics and batik in particular, and challenged the craftsmen with technically demanding requests to merge materials and structures together in ways that hadn’t been attempted before."
