This Spacious Five-Room Henderson Flat Has Bright And Calm Vibes
Light colours and the textures from marble and herringbone contributed to the spacious feel of this home
They set their eyes on a spacious and airy design when homeowners Ken and Wen Eng chose Aloysius Ong of Earth ID to take on the task of renovating their five-room HDB BTO flat in Henderson.
The natural textures of marble and herringbone wood also appealed to the couple, so they requested that these subtle textures be integrated into the home while keeping the overall look minimalist.

Upon entry, one’s eye is immediately caught by the generous bay window which lets in plenty of natural light into the living area. To keep things minimalist, the homeowners chose a bladeless fan from Exhale which blends into the space. Aloysius also designed a corner niche that houses indoor plants for fengshui.
The resulting minimalist canvas also serves as the perfect backdrop for the homeowners’ items on display, like their art collection and guitar.
As the homeowners wanted privacy in the living room, Aloysius designed an L-shaped wood cabinet in the entryway that serves as both shoe storage and a divider that blocks the view from outside into the living area.
The area still has some light that highlights the wood details, though, thanks to the little open niche. Aloysius also included a mirror here so that the homeowners can check their appearance before leaving the house.
The dining area has a similarly neutral and visually restful palette of greys and whites.
The bright colours of the artwork and geometric shape of the pendant lamps pop against the neutral tones.
Using a mostly-white palette helps to keep the kitchen looking minimalist and spacious. Since the homeowners wanted a seamless look, Aloysius removed the boundary wall between the service yard and kitchen, and built cabinets all the way through for extra storage.
White glass on the backsplash, as well as on the lower cabinets on the other side of the kitchen, gives the homeowners a space to scribble grocery lists, recipes, or notes as needed.
As the homeowners love the look of herringbone, Aloysius suggested using herringbone parquet for the flooring, which lends warmth to the space.
Here, Aloysius also created a wardrobe with a built-in niche for bedside table space.
The bathroom’s dark palette contrasts with the rest of the lighter-hued home, creating an ambience of privacy and cosiness.
