From Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and now Blake Lively, celebrities of the like are all turning to box dyes and colour kits to dye their hair during quarantine. Just a few days ago on her Instagram Story, Blake Lively shared that she’ll be dyeing her own hair with the help of her husband Ryan Reynolds. Her colourist, Rona O'Connor, sent over a handmade kit to maintain her signature long blonde waves. All of which included: bleach, colour prep, dye, finishing gloss, and even the tools needed to clip, mix, and blend just like the real deal. Plus instructional notes for Ryan Reynolds to follow.

Upkeeping with your beauty routine is no easy feat when you’re sans-colourist. But if you’re also looking to dye your hair at home (and not so keen on letting your husband do it for you), we've compiled an in-depth guide on everything you need to know and the common mistakes to avoid.

Keep in mind that most root touch-ups and colour refresh box dyes will generally take around 60 to 90 minutes. But the silver lining is that with the advancement of box dyes, your undivided attention is only required for the application part. Once you’ve combed the colour in, just leave it for as long as the label indicates, and go about your daily routine until the timer rings.

We turned to the experts who know the most about box dyes and culled their tips and tricks into an easy guide on how to dye hair at home.
