Review: The Adults-Only Outpost Hotel Reopens With A New Coast-To-Coast Package
Tailor your own staycation experiences at The Outpost Hotel, from an exhilarating boat ride to cable car dining and cocktail making
By Michelle Lee SM -
After being on hiatus for two years (it was an SHN facility), The Outpost Hotel Sentosa is welcoming guests back with a new Coast-to-Coast package that allows guests to tailor their own staycation experiences.
It's an adults-only hotel, which means no guests under the age of 16. If you're looking for a short getaway with your SO without the kids, this is one to have on your radar. Plus, it's just a few minutes away from Imbiah station, making it easily accessible to the beach as well as other attractions and F&B spots.
Here's what to know.
The entrance of the hotel might be hard to locate if you're unfamiliar with the area, which is inconspicuously located within the car park (shared with sister property Village Hotel).
At the stylish, cosy lobby at level three, guests are greeted with a welcome drink while checking in. Then comes the fun part — you'll get to pick your own in-room snacks, which range from cookies to chocolate, chips, and beverages like coconut water and kombucha.
Tip: If you're still feeling peckish, there's a 7-Eleven store located at the nearby Barracks Hotel, which is also a sister hotel.
The Coast-to-Coast package comes with a three-day-two-night stay in a Deluxe Room. We holed up in the 24 sqm Deluxe Room Sea View, decked in a sophisticated black and white palette, with light-coloured wood accents.
The bed is plush and comfy, with large pillows to sink into. And there's that lovely vista of Sentosa's coast. As for in-room entertainment, it has a smart TV with various channels, or you can hook it up to your phone (and yes, Netflix) via Chromecast. There's also a JBL speaker on the side table.
As unsexy as it sounds, I could wax lyrical about the bathroom all day, and in particular, the Toto Washlet. Nothing's quite as glorious as having a warm toilet seat in a cold hotel room, and apart from a heated seat, it also comes with an in-built bidet, multiple cleansing spray patterns, and an air dryer — all available at the touch of the button.
The vanity counter and wash basin are located outside the toilet, with toiletries from Appelles Apothecary & Lab. The counter also doubles as the mini bar, with a mini fridge, a coffee machine (Nespresso capsules are provided), and a small kettle. In the spirit of sustainability, there's no bottled water in the room. Instead, a tap dispenses filtered drinking water.
The new Coast-to-Coast package offers three different experiences to choose from, so you can add a customised touch to your stay.
I went with the 60-min Maritime Heritage Adventure RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat ) ride that departs from Keppel Bay Marina and takes you on an exhilarating ride to the Southern Islands. Along the way, the guide will ply you with interesting nuggets of the area's history. You can even take a short swim or dip your toes. If you're lucky (and it's not rainy or overcast), you'll be able to catch a spectacular sunset as you cruise through the waters.
There's also a Sentosa Coastal Tandem Bike Trail and Picnic experience that comes with a ready-packed picnic lunch for a romantic sojourn. If a sophisticated date night is more your thing, hop on the Cable Car Sky Dining, which takes you on a gastronomic journey in a private cable car cabin, as you soak up the panoramic views of Singapore’s southern coast.
Wait, there's more — you get a $100 voucher to wine and dine at Bikini Bar, Coastes, and Ola Beach Club, located along Siloso Beach. Terms and conditions apply.
Partner Yoga
As part of the package, you can opt to join complementary classes like street dance or a partner yoga session. Yoga is usually held on the pool deck, but in the event of inclement weather (which we encountered), it'll be held at the indoor gym. The instructor was friendly and the session was fun with easy-to-follow instructions while giving our core muscles a good workout.
But while the programme's billed as partner yoga, I was slightly disappointed that there were no partner-specific moves. My spouse and I were also joined by a young child and her mother — not that we minded, but do note that the activity is not limited to adults only.
Cocktail making
We took part in a soy-wine cocktail-making class that introduced us to Sachi, a wine crafted with soy whey. Ingredients were provided and we got to come up with our own simple concoction that can be easily recreated at home. Just don't expect a cocktail masterclass.
The only kid-friendly zones are the pools, which are shared with Village Hotel Sentosa. Ensconced amidst lush greenery, there are three pools to splash in.
For a gorgeous vista of the ocean and sunset, make your way to the Pamukkale Pool, inspired by the white travertine terraced pools in Pamukkale, Turkey. Over at the pool bar, you can sip on boozy concoctions made from custom tea blends or mocktails inspired by Sentosa's rich heritage while lounging on one of the wicker lounges.
There's also the Adventure Pool, studded with social pods that mimic tiny verdant islands. Or hang out on wicker canopies made for two on your very own private isle. Come evening time, a screen is put up at the pool area so you can enjoy a movie (usually kid-friendly) while soaking, or plonk yourself on one of the bean bags located outside of the pool. Otherwise, pick up a donut float, kick back and drift down the Lazy River surrounded by luxuriant foliage, and interspersed with rain curtains.
Alternatively, make your way to the newly opened One-Altitude Coast on the rooftop with an adults-only infinity pool.
As part of the deal, there's daily breakfast at the Mediterranean-inspired Sol & Ora (located at the rooftop, with an earthy colour palette, a vaulted ceiling and glass windows that afford views of the pool and outdoor deck.
For brekkie, it dishes out a small semi-buffet of porridge and various condiments, cured meat, cheese, fruits, and a couple of sweet treats. There's also a choice of plated breakfast items cooked a la minute.
It's a compact menu, but with enough options for a two-night stay, including oozy eggs benny on a bagel and avo toast. The Sol & Ora Fontina Scrambled Eggs gets my thumbs up, with creamy scrambled eggs given a buttery flavour thanks to Fontina cheese, crisp bacon, and sauteed mushrooms as well as sourdough toast. The waffles, served with caramelised banana, candied lemon and a drizzling of rosemary maple syrup are good, too.
Breakfast is from 7am to 10.30am, with 45-minute slots available, which is quite enough to fill up on the a la carte items, the semi-buffet, and leave you with enough time for seconds.
Sol & Ora also opens for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, serving up a menu of dishes from the Latin-Mediterranean region, including Italy, France, Greece, and Spain.
To kickstart our dinner, we tried the ‘Petite Meze’ ($22++) of whipped taramasalata, grilled Padron peppers that were pleasantly mild, falafel discs, Sicilian olives, and crisp Feuille De Bric crackers, though this was just a bit too heavy on the salt.
The mains are done well, such as a fork-tender Seared Red Norwegian Salmon ($32++) with a bright Trapanese pesto alongside grilled fennel and bottarga. The Wood-fired Wagyu Bavette ($44++), a 200g flank steak accompanied with truffle sauce and Maldon salt, was cooked just right with a tender texture and pink centre.
For pre- or after-dinner cocktails, head to 1-Altitude Coast. The rooftop dining and lifestyle destination, outfitted with cabanas, is also home to an infinity pool and an al fresco pool deck. Here, you can order specialty cocktails and grub like pizza, pasta, sandwiches and other bites.
Come dusk, you'll get unobstructed views of a breathtaking sunset that paints the sky in vibrant shades of pink and orange. It's also a great vantage point to catch the fireworks from Sentosa's Wings of Time show, which happens at 8pm daily.
